At times the defense looks better. Looks like we have some decent players in the secondary but we need to play better together. They mentioned that we picked up a game with Florida Atlantic so that is good. These guys need all the experience they can get this year.

I agree w/you Berkman - They're behind but they are playing hard and competing against a good Marshall team - some good hitting by our young DBs bringing some lumber. We have large % of talented freshman and sophomores who will benefit from preparing for and playing in as many games as they can this season. Nice 46 yd FG by Jeremy Martin.

Valience hits the board against the unbeatable Monomoy Girl for a nice price. I'll take it. 8)

That was definitely watchable and seeing improvements--which is all I can ask for from this game and the next with Liberty. FAU will be like a bowl game.

Lots of mistakes obviously and huge room for improvement. But it looked better than Georgia Southern and Marshall is a higher ranked opponent. Incremental improvement.

Have to give Bell credit when it is due: He canned the hurry-up offensive from last season. He played the freshmen QBs and gave them a chance with the play calling to not be overloaded in their first games. Koch looks like an FBS quality QB for a true freshman. Lots of young players on defense look promising. The de-line looks like it will be really strong in the future. O line still sucks but they showed some improvement this week against a really good team.

Too bad they don't have a game against an FCS team or another poor FBS team to play this fall.

The Marshall announcers were really fair and did their homework before the game on UMass.

We need to stop running back kickoffs that are just inside the goal line and take the touch back out to the 35 to give us better starting position.

For the heck of it I looked up the game stats from the UMass/Marshall game in 2001, the last time the times played prior to yesterday's game.

The three win UMass FCS team from 2001 Vs the 2020 FBS UMass team (Marshall was FBS for both games--11-2 in in 2001/6 - 0 this season:

First downs: 2001 UMass 26 UMass 2020 12
Rushing: 215 vs 41
Passing: 149 vs 144
Total Yards: 190 vs 359

The Marshall QB was long time NFL'er Byron Leftwich for the 2001 game....

It is crazy to me how more competitive UMass football was as an FCS program and that was a rebuilding season!

Obviously Marshall was not rated #16 in the nation. Yes, from the time Brown left to last year, was mostly down hill. We went from an elite fcs squad to a mediocre fcs squad and then transition to FBS with some bad hires. Will emphasize, we were mediocre and trending down with Morris.
Go UMass!!

Marshall finished just out of the top 25 that season. I actually attended the Marshall vs number one Florida game that season in Gainesville with my Gator fan relatives. Just before 9/11...

I wouldn't count this season as a normal season when it comes to national rankings due to Covid.

Northampton High "Legend" Valdamar "Te" Brower was on that UMass squad. If I recall correctly, I think he got credited with a sack on Byron Leftwich in that game....

He's an incredible high school coach now at Springfield Central. Wish UMass would bring him on as a coach and bring some of his players (Some FBS talent). Wait, isn't being done on basketball team already!

Brower was a lot of fun to watch get after QBs - fact that he was a Hamp product made it extra cool. Similar to watching Ihedigbo come over from ARHS and develop and flourish into a punishing NFL safety.

Agreed on the national rankings this year. Finally something that makes sense on this board.

Leftwich would have put up 50 in the first half on this years team.
