Looks like we are getting some good building blocks for the future of UMass football.

Yes, it looks like Martin will blue shirt here, but won’t officially commit. It’s a tactic not used very often.

So whats the difference between redshirting and blueshirting? Both are on scholarship but can't play, but can practice, correct? Is it just a way to offset what year they're in?

The blueshirt rule allows schools to put "unrecruited" athletes on scholarship once they arrive on campus, but count them against the next year's scholarship total, as long as they don't play.

One of the wide receivers also plays basketball at his high school. Recently he had 27 rebounds. Another Randal West?

Wait, they weren’t offering their top QB a scholarship?

^^^
He gets a scholarship, but it’s counted toward next year because he doesn’t officially commit. They can blue shirt him, because he did not take an official overnight visit to UMass. It’s going to be really interesting to see who plays QB next year. Since Lindquist is coming in from a JC, I’m guessing he will be given a good shot.

You can play as a blue shirt right away. You could take a blue shirt and then redshirt, but that is not required.

Understand what the staff is doing BUT you are taking away his joy of signing and that part would not like to gamble. He is a need at the most important position. That said, don't play poker.

I understand what you're saying Steve but the coaches have been all over Martin for a long time now. In general I do agree that your most important recruit at your most important position should be locked in ASAP. They must be VERY comfortable with him (maybe the most comfortable of all the recruits?) to push this with him. In the end, I get it - why risk it. If the coaches pull it off, however, it is a very shrewd move and they could even pitch it to Martin that it allows them to get another guy in the 2020 class that will help him for his four years here.

Beat me to it. He can play next year and I think he will be given a fair shot to compete for the job.

When you sign two other QBs in the class, he may not be the priority we thought. I hope he is given a fair shake, especially if he fulfills his part in the Blue Shirt scenario. Bell is right to not sign three QBS. We need depth on D and in the lines.

Nice job by Coach Bell in getting what appears to be a nice early class of good quality players at positions of need. This was a successful early signing period IMO.
