And yet if you subtract expenses and institutional support from revenue, only 23 of 230 D1 schools that report finances to the NCAA make any money. If these 23 schools decided to split up the entirety of that money and give it to the 85 scholarship football players, the most they'd get would be $675,000 per year from Texas A&M ($140k average, $115k median, $1500 minimum (Michigan State)). Now this probably wouldn't be seen as fair to the other ~340 scholarship student athletes at an average D1 school (Google search shows 150k+ scholarships at the ~350 D1 schools). If we divide up the money to every scholarship student athlete they'd earn a max of $135,000 per year at Texas A&M ($28k average, $23k median, $300 minimum (Michigan State)).

Of course every other school (including the 29 other P5 schools that report finances to NCAA) could not afford to pay their student athletes even this average salary ($28k) without reducing other athletic expenditures by an average of ~$12M per year. I'm sure there's plenty of room to cut at P5 schools, but then we can't expect the norm of new apartments, locker rooms, weight rooms, and all kinds of fancy facilities.

McKinney wrote: Tue Nov 28, 2017 7:56 pm Well we don't match (1) so definitely not $2M. However, if (2) applies it could be worth up to $250k+ (for out of state + room & board costs over a max of 5 years).
This thread was about Nick Saban pulling down 11M. That said the same analysis applies and A UMass full ride scholarship is worth far far more than 250K. So to sit there and pretend that students who receive a scholarship "don't get a dime" is preposterous.

Glad someone on here has some sense. The idea that student athletes don't receive a dime is up there with some of the most ridiculous claims.

Beyond the value of the scholarship, if players didn't think they received a benefit from being given the opportunity to play at the D1 level they wouldn't do it. That benefit is the visibility they are given to professional teams, both in the NBA and NFL. If they really want to make money THAT badly they can go play basketball in Europe or play football in Canada when they graduate high school. We'd eventually see whether the visibility that comes from playing in college is a bigger benefit than the money everyone so desperately thinks they should receive.

With all that said, players should be able to sign marketing deals and market their likeness with companies while also being student athletes. The story on the football player who couldn't keep his youtube channel going while playing in college because he made money from it is a prime example of how the NCAA needs to adapt to todays world.

There is a line somewhere though right? Obviously a player is going to make more at a place like UNC, Kansas, Kentucky (etc) off their likeness (assuming you're including jersey sales in that) than they would at most other schools. There's just no way to regulate these benefits. You open the door to allowing players to profit off their creativity and you're going to have big boosters buying finger paintings for $50K.

Some perspective here. This analysis is only for football and men's basketball scholarships and excludes NAIA and NJCAA.

FBS Schools 130 X 85 scholarships= 11,050
FCS Schools 124 X 63 scholarships= 7,812
Div 2 170 X 36 scholarships= 6,120
Div 1 Bball 351 X 13 scholarships= 4,563
Div 2 Ball 314X 10 scholarships- 3,140
Total Scholarships given- 32,685

The overwhelming number of these student athletes  truly benefit from the free ride. In most of the cases, the schools are losing a ton of money supporting the programs. The problem on comes up in the top football and basketball schools where the schools and coaches benefit disproportionately.

IMO, the NBA and NFL should be forced to set up minor leagues for players who have no desire to go to school and want a shot at the pros. This could be easily done if the schools actually held the players accountable for school work (which they don't-see UNC and countless others). The schools and coaches get a free ride from these non student athletes.

When I worked in the financial services industry, many of these players had internships and had access to people and events that many regular employees did not. Their sponsors were alumni of the schools and the students clearly had benefits by being a scholarship athlete. In most cases, they squandered the opportunity because they had stars in their eyes and figured they would go pro- which of course never happened.

From Peter King at SI-

"There is only one word for the college football coaching business, in which Jimbo Fisher, coming off a 5-6 season at Florida State, gets hired/legally hijacked by Texas A&M for a salary actually close to Bill Belichick’s: insanity. Three words, actually: absolute friggin’ insanity."

His salary is being paid completely by donors, no state tax dollars.

So, as it turns out, there is nothing wrong with this.

There is something terribly wrong in our society when a football coach makes that much money and many students struggle to pay for a college education.

If you say so. College affordability has nothing to do with private donations paying for a coach.

Other than the minimal impact that those donations are tax deductible.
