future scheduling talk
Re: future scheduling talk
Let’s put the A-10 bids in perspective.
2014 a very impressive 6 bids. Since then
2015-3 bids
2016-3 bids
2017-3 bids
2018-3 bids
2019- 2 bids
2020- no tournament
2021- 2 bids
2022- 2 bids
That trend is not going back in the right direction. Yes, it gets more bids than the MAC and the CUSA. But for how much longer?
If you want UMass to focus on basketball, the A-10 is trending toward a 1 bid league. Why would you be rooting to stay in the A-10? In the off chance you get the one bid not reserved for the autobid winner? If you want UMass to focus on football, then the A-10 does nothing for it.
What exactly is the benefit of the A-10? I honestly don’t get it anymore. This isnt the 1990s A-10. It’s not even the 2014 A-10. There might be disagreements about whether to go Big East and Indy for football OR MAC/C-USA all sports, but is anyone actually happy with the A-10 anymore?

This trend is more that the P6 leagues are getting more bids at the expense of the mid majors, IMO.jjmc85 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 7:08 pm Let’s put the A-10 bids in perspective.

I've been wondering about that also. Maybe bus rides vs plane rides but I've been saying until I'm blue in the face that at some point football has to find a conference or it will cease to exist. The A-10 is filled with small schools who won MBB national championships or Final Fours 50 or 80 years ago. I don't get it.jjmc85 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 7:08 pm Let’s put the A-10 bids in perspective.

Sometimes you have to just sit back and let things play out in front of you, which I think is the only option right now. That being said, UMass should continue to build and invest in their programs in order to be attractive to a potential future conference. The McCall and Bell hirings did not give the impression UMass was interested in building competitive programs. The Martin and Brown hirings do, now they have to win and put asses in the seats.ZooMass84 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 07, 2022 2:28 pmI've been wondering about that also. Re: future scheduling talk
Agreed. I totally like all the hires now and now we need to actually win some games. The bad old days of McCall and Bell are gone. I am saying there will be at least 2 wins this season: Stony Brook and NMSU/UConn/Ark state. Don Brown is an experienced coach and has seen a ton of games.
Re: future scheduling talk
Chris Vannini in the Athletic mentioned CUSA turning us down as football-only. That could be true but MAYBE just MAYBE Bamford is correct and there will be another big shake up in college football and we can land in the MAC again or another suitable conference.

Re: future scheduling talk
I’d think that would make people even more unsatisfied with the A-10, doesn’t it? If true, there would seem to be nothing the A-10 could do to get back to being a multi-at-large-bid league.minutefanjsf wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 8:42 pm This trend is more that the P6 leagues are getting more bids at the expense of the mid majors, IMO.

Re: future scheduling talk
Is the A10 the problem or, is it more that teams aren't scheduling and winning against tougher schedules? Seems to me that if you want to play in the dance you simply need to win the games, especially out of conference games, that you've scheduled. Assuming of course, that you are not scheduling cupcakes..
I've never understood this logic that not getting teams into the dance is a "Conference/A10" problem. Placing this on the conference removes the responsibility of making the dance from the team.

Save your breath... you'll need it to blow up your date
Re: future scheduling talk
Seems to me the A10 needs to be back to making deep runs in the big dance. Like the sweet sixteen. Bids are not only earned, but repect tends to tail a bit and last a bit. The issue is the A10 lost respect in 2018 with 3 teams and none made it to round 32. Last year was the first year having a team make it to round or 32, but respects starts at the sweet sixteen.
Go UMass!!
