Re: 2024 Season
Hopefully we see the Puma we saw for a game and a drive all year this year.

Was not sure where to put this article regarding Sunday at Wyckoff Country Club in Holyoke, Jim Reid will be honored by the Western Mass. Chapter of the National Football Foundation, together with seven others who will be feted for their contributions to the sport.

Reid has come full circle. A Medford native, he played safety for coach Walter Abbott at Maine and co-captained the Black Bears his senior year in 1972. Afterward he came to UMass for his master’s degree in sport management and was a grad assistant for UMass Hall of Fame coach Dick MacPherson.
He stayed to be linebackers coach and defensive coordinator, and in 1986 was named head coach after Bob Stull left for Texas El Paso. I profiled Reid for The Recorder and contacted Walter Abbott for background. After the usual plaudits Abbott told a story that captured Reid’s intensity. During practice one day, he blew an assignment. They ran it again and he blew it again. “Jim got up and sprinted into a telephone pole,” said Abbott. “He knocked himself out.”
Reid’s Minutemen won three Yankee Conference titles, but in 1991 the athletic director told him he was losing his scholarships.
Reid protested. He’d already offered them to his recruits, but business was business and the department was making budget cuts. Reid quit on the spot. “They’ll forget you the moment you walk out that door,” said the AD.
Reid kept walking. “I thought I’d be at UMass forever,” he said. Instead, he’s coached at nine colleges and universities and was the outside linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2008-09. In 2013 when he was at Iowa, 247Sports named him the linebackers coach of the year.
Go UMass!!

Re: 2024 Season
Remember this period as there was talk of creating a Division 1-AAA. It’s funny how stuck in the past UMass was at that time as it really had no idea if the future might hold for college athletics. I still remember Boyden Gym issuing 1950s gym gear ( Grey shirt, tan shorts and a jock strap all made of cotton)in the late 198os when you worked out a the gym. Felt like I was dressed as an extra in the movie classic “ Porky’s”. . That was a bad sign of how backwards UMass was compared to many other schools! Let’s face the facts that’ll make we got very lucky hiring Cal. As I said before, the decision making process of UMass has been major league subpar as our hiring of coaches, conference affiliations etcSteve81 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 05, 2024 10:55 pm Was not sure where to put this article regarding Sunday at Wyckoff Country Club in Holyoke, Jim Reid will be honored by the Western Mass. End of second week of practice. NE football journal had a piece weeks one. Some guys nursing injuries. Potential exists, waiting on portal, etc. so, not much.

Re: 2024 Season
2024 - 9 = 2015........... that was when Whip was here. There will be a bunch of wins starting next year when we are in the MAC. We'll be on those useless Tuesday/Wednesday night games on ESPN. The indy thing unless you are Notre Dame is a relic of the past. UCan't will need to find a conference.
Re: 2024 Season
Seems like we got a couple decent receivers to add to Simpson and it looks like a couple TEs also came in. Who's the frontrunner in the backfield tho now that KLA is gone? OLine is the big question mark, no?minutefanjsf wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2024 9:09 pmEnd of second week of practice. NE football journal had a piece weeks one. Some guys nursing injuries. Re: 2024 Season
? All around. Our spring practices and game are two to three weeks behind many. NEFJ really liked Haston. Also said there is talent on the team for sure. The portal will likely bring in a RB Apr two. There are some guys there that are serviceable.Floyd wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2024 11:54 amSeems like we got a couple decent receivers to add to Simpson and it looks like a couple TEs also came in.
