I believe it is a private donor paying for it so who knows what the budget isSignMan wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 12:16 pmHaven't been in Liverpool since around 1995. Cousins there were good friends of Brian Epstein's parents. To replicate anything close to the Beatles Pier Head masterpiece, sometimes referred to as the Beatles statue, other times as four statues, would likely have blown the budget here big time.UMassfan_19 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 11:13 amI have zero clue what this means but if you ever seen the Beatles statues in Liverpool that is sort of what I expect

Considering how much he is posting about it, I’m going to assume Ed has an idea of what the budget for this is.

Bob Cousy statue dedication...this Friday, June 18
https://www.nba.com/news/former-celtics ... -Worcester
The dedication, open to the Public, is @ 2 p.m.
https://www.masslive.com/worcester/2021 ... enter.html
The sculptor is placing it today.
If I am feeling better from a little bug I have, and if the Cousy(s) don't plan anything with him tomorrow, Mr. & Mrs. SM are planning to have dinner with the artiste tomorrow.

This is a time, a special time...
to honor the four recipients of these soon-to-be dedicated first UMass athletic statues.
It's not a time to start comparing others to them, them to others, as if this is a competition for more attention to a specific player, team manager, other person involved with UMass basketball history, or a group of players for various four-year time segments.
Coach Jack Leaman, Dr. J, Coach Cal, Marcus Camby.
May I suggest to the posters here...
reflect on what is important to you about these four UMass basketball greats. Post about them, just them...
Time to Win

It's relatively easy to research info about (other) statues, online, to get a rough to pretty good idea what the costs are.InnervisionsUMASS wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 7:12 pmUMassfan_19 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 7:04 pm

The Cousy statue links, all Public via the internet, refer to the cost for that one.
Harbo posted a link to an article which seems to be a reasonable range of costs, as well.
I recall that a post on the thread referring to a much larger figure. I am guessing this could be the case re: more involved statues, probably for professional teams whose owners have deep pockets.
I found an article about the Red Sox needing to add statues for Latin and Black players. The article mentioned $1M per, a seemingly inflated guesstimate, by someone tossing out a number the mega-rich Sox owners could easily afford.
Multiple figure statues are not the norm for athletics statues.
This morning, I came across Brian Hanlon.
https://www.hanlonsculpture.com/about
He did do a multiple figure statue for Indiana
https://www.hanlonsculpture.com/portfol ... basketball
maybe it was for their undefeated team.
I looked to find one for Notre Dame's Four Horsemen, but found just a picture of the four riding horses.
There's a Remington, called COMING THROUGH THE RYE, with four figures. Life size reproductions are $16,000+. The original went to a museum for $4.4M
Rodin did some multi-figure statues, phenomenal works of art. He even made individual statues of each figure, working towards the final product. I have seen one of the individual ones, not a museum piece, but in the art collection at Mayo Clinic, donated by some Hollywood person. I had one-on-one time to see and admire, and touch it... SUPERB.
I did not think it made any sense to think that UM would take a coach and star player from one era and combine a coach and star player from another era on a single statue.

Re: Time for a Dr. J Statue?
a slight digression re the Cousy statue...
We, SM & Mrs. SM, attended the presentation of the statue Friday afternoon @ the DCU Center, as invited guests of the internationally recognized sculptor, and friend of SM. He placed it on Wednesday, then called me to say his Thursday was open. We invited him to lunch, picked him up and had a great 3.5 hr lunch chat.
Of immediate note to Mrs. SM, upon our arrival where he was staying, was the fact that he and I literally look so much alike, anyone could easily assume we are brothers.
After the ceremony, when we entered the reception, at which THE COOZ was available to greet people, one attendee came over to me to congratulate me re the amazing statue I had created. A few seconds later, our sculptor friend came to see us and we all had a good laugh about it.
THE COOZ...
SM made a really nice sign I originally planned to have signed for me, but, instead, showed it to him, had Mrs. SM take a great pic of Cooz and SM with the sign, but it felt so much better to give it to Cooz's daughter for the family to have.
If any of you are in Woostah or anywhere near there, do check out the statue outside the main entrance to the DCU Center, then get post your opinion of it here.
To the best of my knowledge, it is his only statue in our geographic area.
