Dayton (8-4) 58
at UMass (#1, 12-0) 78

Dayton's first game in the A-10, and first against UMass. Marcus Camby scores 38 points, a Mullins Center record that still stands.

I remeber Chris Daniels of Dayton having a very good game that day. A little more than a month later, he was dead. :(

First overtime game of the year, but UM stays perfect. Camby scores 34.

If I am not mistake, that was the Rigo Nunez "dive" game. One of the best flops ever :)

Tapes

Post by JQA-95/97 » Tue Jan 10, 2006 9:52 am

I know there's been some mention that people have old tapes from this (95-96) season. Has anyone copied them to DVD yet? I'd pay and know others that would also. Especially the Wake game and the NCAA games.

Let's resurrect the following thread for that tapes/DVDs topic:

Rigo's "dive" game was in the rematch at Mullins, Feb. 28, 1996, won by UMass 68-66. Also in OT.

UMass (#1, 14-0) 65
at St. Bonaventure (5-7) 52

Marcus Camby collapses in the hallway before the start of the game. Camby is taken to the hospital, and Calipari accompanies him. Bruiser takes control of the team and gets his first, unofficial, head coaching win.

Rhode Island (9-5, 1-2) 71
at UMass (#1, 15-0, 4-0) 77

UMass plays their second game without Marcus Camby. Tied at the half at 36, the Minutemen hang on to win and maintain their #1 ranking.

Donta Bright sets a UMass single-game record of free throws made without a miss (14). Bright led all scorers with 32 points.

UMass was undefeated in Camby's absence. Bright was incredible.

Did the whole season get officially wiped or was it just the final 4 appearance?

I'm pretty sure it's just the NCAA tournament appearance

That's not correct. Our record in the NCAA Tourney was wiped out, everything else stood. We would have been 4-33 if all of his games didn't count.

On the bottom of the 95-96 scoreboard, I have this text:
On May 8, 1997, the NCAA Executive Committee voted to negate the Minutemen's 1996 NCAA Tournament record, for Marcus Camby's acceptance of agents' improper gifts. The 35-2 record was reduced to 31-1, and the UMass slot in the Final Four is officially marked as "vacated." The Final Four trophy, banner and 45% of tournament revenue were returned to the NCAA. Camby reimbursed the school for the $151,617 in lost revenue.

The NCAA seems remarkably easy-going about stolen laptop computers.
