Bye bye perfect season.

George Washington (18-5, 11-2) 86
at UMass (#1, 26-1, 14-1) 76

GW never trailed since the 4-2 mark, and built up a 23 point lead at one point.
Though UMass had 2 more field goals overall, 3 more 3-pointers, and 11 more rebounds, the telling stat was from the stripe (GW: 29-38, UMass 12-19).

Calipari was ejected, for the first time in his career.

"UMass basketball is playing like if you lose, you're going to the electric chair. Well, guess what? It wasn't today. You didn't see the fire. You didn't see the emotion and passion. And I'm not blaming one guy, I could blame myself. George Washington came out and right from the get-go were ready to go, and they beat us at every position."
"To me, they are still the No. 1 team in the country," said George Washington coach Mike Jarvis. "It might sound crazy, but they might thank us for what we did today."

That game also shattered the nations longest home winning streak at the time, if I am not mistaken.

You are correct VOR. It was the first loss ever in the history of the Mullins. For a year or so they had brand new basketball backboards and supports that were collecting dust. No one wanted to install them while the team was still undefeated with the others.

It's amazing to think that in my first two and a half years of college, I had never witnessed UMass lose a game in person. I remember walking out of that one completely stunned with such a foreign feeling of defeat.

It was in fact the previous season, February 14, 1995, that UMass' 41-game home winning streak ended -- as well as its first-ever loss in the Mullins Center after a 27-0 start in the building -- with GW winning 80-78.

The loss to GW the following season, referenced above, gave UMass a 38-2 Mullins record at the time.

St. Joseph's (??, ??) 66
at UMass (#2, 27-1, 15-1) 68

Senior Day in Amherst. Starting lineup: Dingle, Nunez, Cottrell, Giddell Padilla, Bright.

The Hawks and Minutemen go to overtime tied at 58. UMass struggles with cold shooting: 39% overall FG, 53% from the stripe, 0 for 6 from three. The key was rebounding: 57 to 30 UMass, and yet we still only won by 2.

Donta with 15 and 15.....I loved that guys game. Elbow jumpers....floaters, etc. One of the best finishers I've ever seen.....It seemed he never let us down when we really needed him, like when Camby or Roe were out or struggling....

Was this Camby's last game in Amherst? Calipari must have thought Camby was going to come back for another season if he did not start him.

Yes, it turned out to be Camby's last home game. Though it was widely speculated that he would declare for the draft, it wasn't certain at the time.

I don't know if I've ever heard of a situation where a non-senior was given a senior day type sendoff.

I'm way late on this one...

March 2, 1996

UMass (#2, 28-1) 62
at Louisville (#21, 19-10) 59

In the regular season finale, UMass plays in front of over 20,000 in Louisville's home court, Freedom Hall. Carmelo Travieso blocks DeJuan Wheat's three-point attempt on the final possession.

Edgar Padilla steals 5 to push his single-season total to 75, which sets a new school record for steals in a season. He would go on to swipe 33 more in post-season play. The 2.9 spg average is still best in the school record books.

It was, but it's worth re-posting.

So let's play catch up since my last update...

3/7/96
St. Bonaventure (10-18) 56
UMass (#2, 29-1) 69
Atlantic 10 Tournament Quarter-Final, at the Philadelphia Civic Center

UM shoots 52% from the floor, holds SBU to 34%, and wins the boards by 14. Both teams struggle with 21 turnovers. Mass collects 16 assists to Bona's 4.

"This is our tournament," said Camby. "We have won it four straight years. We wanted to come down here and stake our claim."

<a href="http://umasshoops.com/cgi-bin/frameset. ... sHoops.com" target="_top">http://umasshoops.com/games/1995-96/03071996.htm</a>

~~~~~~
3/8/96
George Washington (21-7) 65
UMass (#2, 30-1) 74
Atlantic 10 Tournament Semi-Final, at the Philadelphia Civic Center
Mass takes a whopping 73 shots, helped by the 20 offensive rebounds we collected. Camby took 23 himself, but only converted on 6.
Camby's three blocks gives him 102 for the season, making the 6-foot-11 junior the only player other than LSU's Shaquille O'Neal to swat 100 or more shots in each of his first three seasons.
<a href="http://umasshoops.com/cgi-bin/frameset. ... sHoops.com" target="_top">http://umasshoops.com/games/1995-96/03081996.htm</a>
~~~~~~

3/9/96
Temple (19-12) 61
UMass (#2, 31-1) 75
Atlantic 10 Tournament Final, at the Philadelphia Civic Center

Massachusetts becomes (at the time) only the third team in NCAA history to win five straight tournament and regular-season championships.

Carmelo Travieso hits on seven 3-point shots and is named the tournament MVP. "I give a lot of credit to (Edgar) Padilla setting me up for good shots," Travieso said. "I don't even have to look at him on the floor when I'm setting up, because I know he'll get me the ball in good position."

"UMass is a very talented ballclub," said Temple coach John Chaney. "They had an answer for everything. You were looking at the best team in the country."

Ross Burns gets an assist, Rigo Nunez hits a field goal. Bizarre stat line: Giddell Padilla - 2 rebounds, 1 turnover, 3 personal fouls, all in 1 minute.

<a href="http://umasshoops.com/cgi-bin/frameset. ... sHoops.com" target="_top">http://umasshoops.com/1995-96/0309temple/</a>

~~~~~~
3/14/96
Central Florida (East #16, 11-19) 70
UMass (East #1, 32-1) 92
NCAA Tournament First Round, at the Providence Civic Center
Central Florida (now a Conference USA member) only goes 3-10 at home through the season, and 6-10 overall in Atlantic Sun conference play, but storms through the conference tournement to earn the automatic berth. UMass is not impressed however, as they wreck the Knights on the boards, 53-31.
Travieso scores 21, Camby goes for 14 and 17.
<a href="http://umasshoops.com/cgi-bin/frameset. ... sHoops.com" target="_top">http://umasshoops.com/1995-96/0314centralflorida/</a>
~~~~~~

3/16/96
Stanford (East #9, 20-9) 74
UMass (East #1, 33-1) 79
NCAA Tournament Second Round, at the Providence Civic Center

A 75-74 game with 52.7 seconds to go, Donta Bright hits a foul-line jumper and Camby adds a pair of free throws to seal the victory. "I came off a screen from Marcus and Dana (Dingle) gets me on a down screen," said Bright about his jumper. "And the plan was if they help on Marcus, just give me the ball and let me shoot and just hope it goes in. And it did."

Brevin Knight scores 27 for the Cardinal. "Stanford did not quit playing, we got them down and Brevin Knight was unbelievable," Massachusetts coach John Calipari said. "We had no answers for him. He goes through his own legs and then through your legs. He goes through you and up and under you. He was fabulous today. We tried three different ways to stop that screen on the ball and couldn't do it."

<a href="http://umasshoops.com/cgi-bin/frameset. ... sHoops.com" target="_top">http://umasshoops.com/1995-96/03161996.htm</a>

That brings us up to date.

10 years ago today...

Arkansas (East #12, 20-13) 63
UMass (East #1, 34-1) 79
NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, at the Georgia Dome, Atlanta GA

Who would have thought that with Camby not starting and only playing 18 minutes, Travieso & Bright each going 5-14 from the floor, and UM turning the ball over 21 times that we win by 16? Well, everything else seemed to fall into place, and the Minutemen advance to the Elite 8.

UM jumps to a 13-0 lead and never looks back. Arkansas only hits 5 field goals in the first half.

"It was a great defensive effort," Calipari added. "I'm very happy for my basketball team. We did what we had to do to win. They are a good, young basketball team. We put pressure on them early, which is just what we wanted to do."

"It seemed like we couldn't throw the ball into the ocean," Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson said. "We missed four layups to start the second half, four layups. Those are missed opportunities. We put ourselves in a big hole."

Doesn't Travieso take a tumble off the media podium sometime around now?

It wasn't mentioned in the Arkansas game recaps, but was in the Georgetown recaps.

I'm a little late on this.....but I'm guessing the reason Cal didn't start him is because you are not allowed to start 6 players in a basketball game......
