Game 28, 2024-25: at GW (2/22)

Post by MikeUMA » Thu Feb 20, 2025 10:48 am

Possibly our last trip to the Smith Center coming up next. Saturday at 6 on ESPN+.

GW basketball goes back to 1912-13, and UM/GW only met once prior to the formation of the Atlantic 10 (called the ECBL at first).

With UM's 1-3 slide, we've fallen to 10th in the A-15 standings. GW is 11th. So, this is effectively a game to try to get out of pillow fight territory. Standings with tiebreakers: https://bsky.app/profile/d1scourse.bsky ... lf62crnk2f
Just 3 weeks ago we were playing for a chance to be in 3rd place :(

Advantage GW as they're home this week, while we're doing back and forth road trips. The M'men returned to campus after last night's game.

Last night, GW fell at home to Saint Joe's: https://gwsports.com/news/2025/2/19/men ... ephs-79-68

We handled GW in Amherst last month...

...but that was with a healthy team. Jay Burnham mentioned last night that Curry might not play on Saturday, Watson didn't suit up last night, and yesterday's broadcasters said Rivera was hampered by some knee trouble.

Winning on the road is never easy, and with a hobbled team, we have our work cut out for us to get a W.

Frank Martin vs Chris Caputo

I know a lot of folks pushed for Caputo to be the next UMass HC at one point

Has anyone heard anything on the health of the team and on Curry's wrist? We beat them 74-61 when we were healthy and I think we would have a decent shot if we were healthy for this game.

They have weaknesses, just as we do. They only have one 3-point shooter, Autry, at 37% in A10 play. As a team, they shoot 29% from 3. Their big threat is 6-11 Castro, who is averaging 16 and 9, with about 1.5 blocks per game. He went for 23 and 7 against us, going 9/11 from the field.

I hope we're healthy, otherwise it could be another tough day at the office.

No and I don't think we're going to get anything prior to Jay's pregame radio report. Game preview articles are almost nonexistent anymore.

Because of player privacy issues they are required not to reveal the status of injuries.

Pretty sad when we are 6.5 dogs to a team we beat by 13 a month ago.

The lines for A10 have swung all year about 10 points depending on who is the home team. We were slight favorites even though we won by double digits. This is nothing new.

Anybody who's looking for the audio stream: the Varsity app looks like its start time is an hour late, not starting until 6:40.

Can get to it directly via WEEI Springfield

Frank pregame radio:
No Jaylen Curry today.
Worthy is still not 100% yet.

My guess is that see don’t see Curry again. This has a certain Noah Fernandes feel to it.

Nice we get to hear Jimmy Patsos. Always sounds like he just inhaled a carton of Marlboro Reds.

Rivera literally throws the ball at the basket with concerning regularity.
