Game 20, 2024-25: GW (1/22)

Post by MikeUMA » Sun Jan 19, 2025 10:54 pm

Game 20 already, coming up on Wednesday at 7. ESPN+ has it.

GW comes in at 13-5 overall, 2-3 in the league, 4-4 away from DC. They fell at Mason in 2OT today, 80-77.
https://gwsports.com/news/2025/1/18/men ... ason-80-77

We've played 4 common opponents. We both beat NJIT and Dayton, we both lost to Mason and Richmond.

We have a mini-break coming up, with no game this weekend. It'd be nice to go into that with a 3-game win streak.

We'll also face them again exactly 1 month later, at GW.

A not fun fact popped up on the Today In History list...

1/21/1989: UMass 77 at GW 103
That '88-89 season, GW prevailed in only one game all season, that one against us.
I have a note from that game: Calipari, in his first season as a head coach, gets T'd up and is so frustrated that he tries to incur another, throwing his jacket and tie into the stands.

Lot of history here as fellow A10 charter member GW visits Amherst for the last time in conference play. When UMass leaves for the MAC, the only remaining charter members of the Eastern Eight, the A10's forerunner, will be GW and Duquesne. Many great memories, especially the Calipari-Jarvis years which, while not as bitter as the Cal-Chaney rivalry, were pretty intense. I hope they stay on our non-conference schedule from time to time.

Duquesne loses a point in my book, because they left the league for a season (1992-93) and had a cup of coffee with the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, now the Horizon League.

Curious what that was all about. Changing their mind after just a season just seems really odd.

^ Wow, I forgot all about that. That explains why the game preview on the GW website said UMass and GW are the only charter members. The A10 opponents I will miss the most are GW, URI and St. Joe's.

^ Same here. Too bad St. Joe’s isn’t making an appearance at UMass this season.

I was at the 1995 debacle. It was actually a great (albeit frustrating) game. Having the President in attendance magnified the situation, but I bet he would have showed up in the locker room had the outcome gone our way.

I kind of remember the Calipari suit jacket toss at another Smith Center frustration.

It's an interesting matchup. They have 5 guys who average between 10 and 15 points in A10 play. However, in A10 play, they only hit 30% of their 3s so like us, they do most of their scoring inside. They do like to shoot the 3 though as they take over 40% of their shots from there.

Castro, their center, is a 6-11 transfer from Providence, where he didn't play much. He's averaging 13 and 9 in A10 play with over 2 blocks a game.

Drumgoole, a 6-5 wing, is on his 4th school. He played against us at Albany in the 2022-2023 season. He went for 20 and 6, with 5 assists in an 87-74 UMass win. He's averaging 15 and 4 in A10 play, but he's a volume scorer at 35% from the field and only 25.5% from 3. He takes 10 3s per game.

Their 6th man is a 6-7, 235 wing, Buchanan who is averaging 11 and 7 in A10 play.

They are a tough defensive team, giving up less than 70 a game. They are beatable, but it won't be easy. Our D has to match theirs.

This season was always one of the most underrated years of UMass hoops despite the 10-18 record. If Brown and Chase didnt get booted i think this team would have been over .500. I went to every game that season and sat two rows behind the bench in the old Cage. We could tell we had something in Coach Cal by sitting so close. Ended up scoring over 100 in win over Rutgers, who the league that year.

Game notes

Lines currently show UMass either -1.0 or -1.5
I don't bet but I wouldn't touch that one either way.

All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

Curry making me eat all the negative things I’ve said about him in this first half and I couldn’t be happier to see it.

What a scrappy first half

Curry is keeping us in the game and Curry and Worthy are going to have to give us valuable PT in the 2nd half - that Fordham game took a lot of Diggins and squad and their legs aren’t there. This upcoming week off before the URI game will be well needed!

Liking what we’re seeing from DHS - getting that first step back
