Game 18, 2024-25: at Fordham (1/15)
Game 18, 2024-25: at Fordham (1/15)
Anyone planning to go to the last hurrah at Rose Hill in two weeks?
The Mass Collective was thinking about trying to put together a pregame but not sure if that has gone any further.

I always go to the games at Rose Hill and it’s a shame I’m missing the last one but I just moved to Los Angeles.
Where are my UMass west coasters? I know we have some!

Barring a buy-out, looks like UMass at Arizona State next season. That'll probably be the closest you'll get for the foreseeable future.inthescoop wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2025 8:31 pm I always go to the games at Rose Hill and it’s a shame I’m missing the last one but I just moved to Los Angeles.

^ My son lives in Tucson. Who knows…if the timing is right maybe we could be a loud UMass cheering section!

On to Fordham. They are 0-4 in conference, but they have played the iron thus far. Losses at home to SLU and SBU (combined 24-9) and on the road to VCU and Davidson (combined 24-8).
I do like the matchup from a physical point of view. Their guards are 5-11 and 6-0, much different than today's chore. For the last 2 games they started 6-5 and 6-7 at the forward spots. The center is big at 6-9, 245 but we match up well at all of the other spots.
The center position does worry me a bit because their backup center is 6-9, 250. In conference play, they have split the time roughly 21 and 19. They play basically 8 guys and the other 2 off the bench are both 6-6. I'm discounting all of the A10 stats, which look horrible for Fordham, because of who they have played.
Winning on the road is never easy, but this might be the best chance we have.

Fordham is pretty similar to us as some of the numbers shake out.
PPG: Fordham 73.8, UM 73.5
Defensive: UM allowing 74.9, Fordham 75.8, those are both bottom among the A-15
In Sports Reference's Net Rating calculation, which is point differential per 100 posessions, UM and Fordham are 2 of the 3 teams in the negative, along with Richmond.
We're both in the top 2 in SR's Pace calculation.
We're both in the bottom three in overall FG%, again along with Richmond.
Fordham gives up buckets though: .467 FG% and 473 FGs allowed are both worst in the league. We could use the help in getting more shots to fall.
Like MG said, this might be the best chance we have for a win. Fordham is the last team on our schedule with a (current) sub-200 NET, at 250. Everyone else we have left is 168 (Duquesne) or above.

Despite being on the road, this is a must win if we want to show that we're not a bottom tier team. Fordham is 0-4 in conference play at the moment, the only winless team.
We know we're not a top tier team, but we can run in the middle of the pack, the UMass way.

Re: Game 18, 2024-25: at Fordham (1/15)
UMass used to run at the (very) top of the pack. Oh my, how we've settled.

ESPN+ has it tomorrow.
SNY will have it tape delayed, shown at noon on Thursday.
Good riddance to the UM/Fordham series. Despite us holding the all-time 34-19 (.642) edge, they've been thorns in our side over the years...
The only thing that keeps them from being truly loathsome: their court is named for Frank McLaughlin, brother of our former player / coach / longtime supporter Tom.

- The only college team that beat Julius Erving twice in his varsity career (Rams were really good in that era)
- Fordham's first A10 road win was at the Mullins Center in 1999. They had been 0-27 before.
- Rams went 1-15 in the league in 2002-03. We were the 1, and lost by 13.
- Rams' win in Mullins in 2008 put a big dent in our at-large resume
- Rams went 0-16 in the league in 2009-10, with an average deficit of nearly 18 points. Their closest loss: a 2-point defeat in the Mullins Center. Ricky Harris averts overtime with 3 seconds left. Jared Grasso was the Rams interim coach.
- Fordham was on a 41 conference game losing streak until UMass showed up on Hawk Hill in 2011
- Jeff Neubauer had a 5-game win streak against us (2016-19)
- The 2018-19 Rams were 0-8 in the league, came into Mullins in February, left 1-8 with an 18-point win

The spread on this game ranges anywhere from Fordham being favored by 1.5 to us being favored by 1.5, depending on the site.

Always felt like you’re at a high school gym at Rose Hill
Side notes: looks like Jeff Neubauer never coached again after Fordham and Jared Grasso is now coaching high school ball in Long Island
