Gen Z kids are the worst - glued to their iPads and phones
Re: Students
The student section looked pretty full on TV at last night’s hockey game.

Re: Students
I been both a hockey and basketball STH for years!
The student turnout for hockey has always been good. They add a lot of to the game atmosphere!
On the other hand with basketball, it seems like students have not turned out since the Calipari days.

Re: Students
Students come when they are winning, Chaz years, Ford years, etc. the dumb gimmicks/marketing has doomed the student attendance, IMO.doubledribble wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 8:00 pmI been both a hockey and basketball STH for years!

Re: Students
Its going to take years of sustained winning to bring it up, and I think that is probably a maybe. Even 2024, with their winning record and a good product, was lower than 2023 and obviously this year is going to be ugly. National basketball attendance is down around 25% in the last 10 years but has kind of leveled off in the last few so the hope is that this is the bottom. Guess we'll see. I don't think going to 72 or 76 teams for march madness is going to help for the regular season attendance but the money is in the tourney so it's inevitable.
The other challegen is this area has also continued to shifted so far to pro sports there's just a real lack of interest from the get go. It's only emperical but the younger kids and the co ops at my work have zero interest in college football and basketball. They follow the pro games but don't really care about anything college. Even the kids that gamble, which I'm surprised about.

Ummm... 3-8 Umass is one of the biggest front-runner schools in the country.
I see you are new here.

Re: Students
We're seriously doing this again? I also can not understand why students don't want to walk a half mile in the freezing cold to watch one of the worst college basketball teams in the country.
I'm assuming classes get out soon and finals are coming up, so we won't see hardly any students in attendance until classes resume at the end of Jan/early Feb. It will take the team going on one hell of a run between now and then (not happening) to increase student interest. I'm a pom pom waving diehard maroon footie pajama UMass faithful and I have little to no interest in watching this team.

How have marketing events doomed student attendance? They held a PS5 giveaway for the Lowell game. How does that hurt?minutefanjsf wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 9:14 pm the dumb gimmicks/marketing has doomed the student attendance, IMO.

This is the answer, don't overthink it.minutefanjsf wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 9:14 pm Students come when they are winning, Chaz years, Ford years, etc.
Students go to hockey because the program has been nationally competitive in recent years, and have the 2021 natty to back it up.
Hoop hasn't had sustained success in over a decade and arguably much longer than that. Flashes in the pan are nice but don't consistently put butts in the seats.
Re: Studentse program
One aspect of the disconnect with hoop is that there is no " face of the program" player that elevates the program among younger fans. Cal & Jack did it as coaches. Julius, Marcus, Lou, & Chaz brought attention to the team with flare and winning. Players jump around to different teams too much now to connect with fans. And just read the thread about coaching and you can see there is no connect there with most fans either. With all the money thrown at these kids, it's going to be difficult for a school like UMass to have those peaks
Time to Win
Re: Students
The team is neither fun nor entertaining. In fact, I usually end up feeling worse after each game. I attribute being addicted to the program as a form of mental illness on my part. The more appropriate question should be why do any students attend games.
Re: Students
Back in the days of Skinner, Eldredge, Pyatt, etc.,the games were usually over in an hour and forty minutes. There were no media timeouts. And timeouts did not wait for multiple commercials. There was limited late-game fouling unless the teams had a legitimate chance of overcoming a two- or maybe three-posession deficit. Two and a quarter hours is not unusual any more with a lot of dead time. Apologies to the pep band who thankfully help the dead time.
I was fortunate to have witnessed a very good program. But there were places to go and people to see (and of course, study groups to attend), so thankfully we were entertained at the Cage.
Add in the fact that players are no longer dedicated to the program, so the fans have no continuity and can easily lose interest from one season to the next.
