Re: Students
It's awful, but it's also not UMass that is denying him the money. It's the promotions company and their insurance. But check this out, Frank reached out to the kid: https://twitter.com/coachFMartin/status ... 3277502632
Re: Students
too bad; insurance/promo co info correct, but the rules told the participant easily could have been better communicated.
I do believe we have an excellent Communications Dept. Perhaps, a Communications Dept student intern shpuld be working with Athletics.
These four shots in 30 sec is not easy.
Many years ago, I belonged to the Orchards Hills gym in Leominster, They had a full court I shot around on after my workouts during the day when the court was usually empty. I practiced the layup, FT, Three, half-court 30 sec drill, doing the three underhand behind the line with forward release spin.
One day, a couple of kids, maybe 14, came in and sat at first to watch me...
which was a first in my life.
I looked and signaled them to watch me, and not so calmly sunk all four within time...
Yes, they gave me THE LOOK, so I held up my palm with a wait signal, indicating I'd attempt it a second time...layup with spin perfect, swish with backspin FT, swish with backspin three, and underhand perfect half court make.
I retrieved the ball, looked straight at them with a grin, tossed them the ball and walked out of the gym.
I'm still smiling remembering it.
I finally got chosen to try it at a regulation game, halftime at one of the Cage games...
I should never have tried it because I had a very sore shoulder with rotator pain, and totally sucked up the joint.
Well, team Sign Man, IV, OC, Berkman and Marcus could do pretty well.
Marcus could set an offensive rebound record.

I was one of the people who got to do this at halftime of the Wake Forrest game - Camby vs. Duncan (i think there were 3 of us). I missed the half court shot but made the layup, foul shot and 3 pointer. I got a nice swag bag of stuff for it.

Yes I was at that game. A packed house watched you … 3 out of 4 is pretty darn good!
Students were at games in those days for sure!

For all those wondering, we’re working on getting $10K to Noah. If we can’t get to a good result via the insurance company, we will pay him directly. We appreciate his support of @UMassAthletics & want to reward his fun accomplishment the other night at our @UMassWBB game.
Re: Students
I seem to recall that there is an NCAA rule that the student section can't be behind the visitors bench.InnervisionsUMASS wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 1:10 pm It should be behind both hoops, but that would require students to show up en masse. I'm good with it being behind the opposing bench as well.
I think I read that somewhere several years back.

Re: the $10K shot entanglement.
A Boston Globe article today has a statement from the promotions company (Odds On Promotions) via the AP which states they never denied the claim because it was never sent to them and that UMass acted on their own and they were not involved in the invalidation of the contest win.
In a statement emailed to The Associated Press on Friday night, Odds On Promotions, said the university went ahead with its decision without ever filing a claim. The Reno, Nevada, prize indemnification insurance company said it had not completed its 30-day claim verification process and no decision had been made. “No formal claim or request for prize money was made by the University to Odds On in this matter,” the company said. “Odds On was not involved in the initial invalidation of the contest win and only became aware of the University’s decision to not pay the contestant through media coverage.”

Re: Students
That last statement is a little shady. Why would the university decide payment isn't warranted if they had an insurance policy, and is Odds On watching all college hoop games coverage? Sounds like backlash made them backtrack the decision
Either way, hopefully the kid gets his cash

Re: Students
He's getting his money. From Garret Cote of the Gazette:
Why anybody would believe an insurance company (or the Boston Globe) is beyond me.A source close to the situation just showed me an email from Odds On Promotions sent to UMass, and in it Odds On clearly states that the shot didn't count because the contestant's foot was on the line.
Looks like Odds On indeed invalidated the contest, despite saying otherwise
Re: Students
Whatever happens, the student seems like a likeable nice kid and he was a good representative of the university through all of this. I saw him in a couple interviews, he took the whole thing in stride. That promotions company deserves shame and ridicule for pulling this nonsense.

Re: Students
My hope, and yes I am being vindictive, is that all this negative publicity costs the promotions company/insurance company many multiples of $10,000 in lost future business.
