My fearless prediction: There will be a significant student turnout for hockey this Friday night.

My hope is Reyes will foster a new culture at UMass that makes attending athletic events the “thing” to do. Not sure how it happens. The trends seem to be counter to this in many places. Winning matters. There needs to be genuine perks, not the chance at a PlayStation giveaway. Even though it was hokey the idea of making the student section “the cage” was in the right track. In the hey day, students chanting and demanding that all non students “stand up”, because students didn’t sit for the entire game, was awesome and impossible to do now, and it was a genuine perk of students having a large presence, etc. One immediate change that can be made is to promote (instead of denigrate) all athletics to potential students on tours. Reworking orientation to incorporate some school spirit and support for athletics could go a long way was well.

Or don't even bother to go to... One of my favorite typical posts in any home game thread is "boy, the crowd looks pretty small on TV". I know it's hard to get out to Amherst on a weekday night, especially with weather, but I just shake my head when people who aren't there complain about the crowd.

Happy to say, not all of us old fogie season ticket holders. There are some games where I'm hoarse from all the yelling, such as "box out" !!!.

Were you there? The place was swamped with students. The concourse was buzzing with them and they were seated all throughout the arena, not in the designated student section. Just a shame to throw away a game like that when so many students were there. Hats and marketing promos can only do so much, you have to win to keep them coming.
