Game 1, 2024-25: New Hampshire (11/4)
Come on people, let's get the game discussion going. UNH coming to town for only the 2nd time in the last 30 years. We used to play them regularly in the old days, and in the Yankee Conference, but this will be just the second meeting since the Calipari era.

This is one we should win handily. The Wildcats were picked dead last in the 9-team America East.
https://americaeast.com/news/2024/10/21 ... -poll.aspx
Their star from last season, Clarence Daniels, won AEC POY, but he's gone now. (A little UNH trivia: Their last AEC player of the year was Scott Drapeau in 1994. Drapeau is a deep cut piece of UMass trivia, as he played his first semester freshman year for Calipari, but transferred out and up to UNH.)
They've been middling in the AEC for the past several years. Last year was a 16-15 / 7-9 campaign, the first campaign under coach Nathan Davis. Davis did well in his first few years at Bucknell, but slid in his last four.

I'll bring this over from an earlier thread. I agree with Mike, we should win this game easily:
They only return 11.9 points and 6.6 rebounds. We lost a lot, but we return 35.7 points and 14.3 rebounds. I also have to think our new guys are better than theirs.

I don't know anything about UNH hoops. Looked at their lineup and didn't recognize any names. Did see they have some guys with some length. I doubt they will match up well with our bigs.
I'm hoping to see our backcourt get hot shooting.

They lost almost everyone. The leading returning scorer averaged 7.7 points and 3.9 rebounds. Next in line averaged 3.2 points and 1.2 rebounds. We are favored by 16.5.DoctorJ wrote: Sun Nov 03, 2024 4:47 pm I don't know anything about UNH hoops. Looked at their lineup and didn't recognize any names. Preview from the Gazette: https://www.gazettenet.com/UMass-basket ... n-57757417
The author mentions our potential to be a poor shooting team, which I think is everyone's concern here. I hope we can get the outside shots going tonight against UNH to give our shooters some confidence heading into a tough matchup with West Virginia.

No line for tonight? What is up with that?
Massey projects Umass winning by 11
KenPom has them favored by 16 Points .
Both of these sites are pure data driven so it is not as reliable an indicator until there are 8-10 games played.

Re: Game 1, 2024-25: New Hampshire (11/4)
It's early, with a lot of new players who will see big minutes. I expect to see good defense tonight if nothing else. If they are communicating well and look like a cohesive team I will be pleasantly surprised. I do expect to see these things fall in place by the 5th or 6th game.
On offense, we know that 3 point shooting is probably an issue. I want to see drive and dish with a lot of easy buckets at the rim. Against UNH we have the people to pull this off.

Dana Dingle. Besides being a very talented player at UMass, I'd rank him as one of the most consistent players I've ever watched play. You knew what you were getting every night, and he did it with a very steady, quiet demeanor. Guy was truely a HUGE part of that UMass era.umasscollective wrote: Mon Nov 04, 2024 1:35 pm Podcast for today as you prep for the game with Dana Dingle: https://umasscollective.us21.list-manag ... e83fd8d7b1
Dingle & Bright, what a combo
