MAC Sports topics that include Hoops

Quoting part of page 1 the 6 page White Page Document, requesting Congress assistance for declaring student athletes special non-employee status.
Dear Congressional Leaders:
As members of the NCAA, an association who supports collegiate amateur sports, the Mid-American
Conference (MAC) Council of Student Athletes (COSA) is seeking your assistance in declaring student athletes special status as non-employees, amateurs, of their collegiate institutions. Our committee is
composed of two student-athlete representatives from each of the twelve conference athletic departments¹.
Together, our committee represents approximately 5,200 student-athletes. The Mid-American Conference
spans across the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New York, and Ohio. We call upon our congressional
representatives to support federal legislation that declares student-athletes as non-employees to ensure we
retain our amateurism status - we urge consideration of the creation of a special amateur status for our
unique experience of utilizing our athletics prowess to earn a collegiate degree.
The MAC COSA rejects student-athletes employment status on the following grounds:
- Healthcare
- Academic Support
- Workforce Development
- Contract Implications
- Taxation Obligations
- Inequitable Resource Distribution
- International Student-Athletes
- Next Generation - High School Student-Athletes

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- During the fall 2023 semester, Mid-American Conference (MAC) Commissioner Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher asked the Council of Student-Athletes to examine the potential implications of the possible classification of student-athletes as employees.

The MAC Council of Student-Athletes is responsible for reviewing and recommending initiatives for the benefit of student-athlete welfare and experience. The Council of Student-Athletes is part of the Conference’s governance structure and consists of two-member student-athletes that represent each institution’s student-athletes on the Council.

After careful consideration, the student-athletes determined the most effective way to convey its perspective and aspirations for the future of college athletics was to draft a white paper for submission to members of Congress. On the behalf of the Council of Student-Athletes, the Conference is releasing its paper.

"The Mid-American Conference commends the diligent efforts of the Council of Student-Athletes in addressing the critical issue of the status of student-athletes,” said MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher. “The paper drafted by our student-athletes reflects their engagement and thoughtful consideration of this critical issue. It also highlights the vital role that student-athletes play in shaping the future of college athletics. Their commitment to advocating for their welfare and experience is commendable and serves as a testament to the importance of their voice in these discussions."

Yes, get you don't care much what a conference offers beyond hoops. It's an education process of what the conference offers. Whether it's football or any of the many other sports that the MAC is on par with the beloved A10. Know most did not listen to the whole press conferences. So this is some of the stuff the Council of Students take on. The Dartmouth case and student athletes winning a case as employees and unionizing possibilities opens up a huge can of worms that rivals in magnitude the NIL court decisions. The MAC does involves student athletes and gives them a voice. Bet if this was offered in the past, some UMass athletes would have wanted to serve on the council. Two student athletes will have their opportunity starting with 2025. Something this important, it's interest inthescoop, that is your reaction.

This MAC podcast have some interesting comments that are about hoops, football and other things. This is with the commissioner and will post the questions from the link, which has the commish responses.
https://www.themscpodcast.com/post/mac- ... roundtable

Reporter 1: John, you have two teams in women's basketball right now that have 25+ win seasons [in] Ball State and Toledo. Yet, it will be rare for one of them to make the [NCAA] tournament because they don't win the MAC tournament. Has there been any discussions with the NCAA that may change that to help MAC teams?

Reporter 2: The 14 team playoff has been in discussion for 2026. How does that directly benefit the MAC and the group of five conferences, if at all?

Reporter 2: My second question: [The MAC] just added UMass [starting 2025]. Any talks on potential expansion partners to get us to an even 14?

Reporter 3: This is the first year for the MAC/Sun Belt Challenge here in basketball. I was curious on your thoughts on how that event went?

Reporter 4: Obviously [some] talks about expanding the NCAA tournament. I am seeing the number right now that people seem to think that will be settled on [is] 76. If it does expand are you fearful that it won't benefit the mid-majors but will more benefit the high majors?

Reporter 4: Is it fair to say that the decisions being made [about] the playoffs will have an impact on all of college sports?

Reporter 4: Are you content with the 1.8 billion dollar payout [divided amongst Group of Five conferences] that is expected? It is a little bit more than the past deal.

Reporter 2: You talked about the Sun Belt-MAC Challenge earlier. Are there are opportunities and windows open for similar challenges with other Group of Five conferences, maybe with the Mountain West?

Reporter 5: With the addition of UMass, that leaves 13 teams in the MAC. First of all, how long did those discussions take, and could we see more teams maybe join the conference?

Reporter 6: You mentioned that the TV deal with ESPN has not been finalized. Is there a deadline in your mind for when you'd like that to be done?

Reporter 6: Is that because of the [now defunct] Alliance [between the Big Ten, PAC-12 and ACC]?

Reporter 7: Obviously, you know that NIL has changed the landscape of college sports the last few seasons. How do you think the MAC has handled that and how do you think maybe MAC schools are doing? What draws athletes to your universities?

Reporter 8: The Darthmouth Men's basketball team, obviously they're a certified union right? They're now going to go through the collective bargaining --

Reporter 8: Could the Mid-American Conference survive revenue sharing or [athlete] employment?

Reporter 9: A lot of MAC football teams play bigger opponents like SEC schools, to start the season, and with a lot of injuries happening in those games. What benefits do you see come from those games, aside from the money aspect?

Know many asked about the other sports of the MAC compared to the A10. Well MAC has nearly twice the number of Director's Cup points with less teams than the A10. MAC 6,669 compared to the A10 3,504.

Let's be like Xavier when they came into the A10. Let us do the same in the MAC. Always fighting for the conference title and being tough on everyone on the schedule. Don't know if Western Kentucky will decide to switch to the MAC by April 30th. They have a very good NCAA history and were in the dance this year. BUT, they lost their coach and promoted up the assistant. We know that can be a risky proposition and could see a set back. Realize it's tough for many here and the reason did suggest to create a separate board in the site general comments with MAC posts. The information is for all, the general all sports and primary hoop fans alike. Not necessarily taking the sting out for the primary hopp fan. But to help in their understanding the MAC is general a good all sports conference.

Much better than CUSA, which Delaware is finding a very hard time finding associate membership for the half dozen plus sports that don't exist in CUSA. The A10, NEC, and Big East have all turned them down, reported by Matt Brown.

By the way, we have 8 OOC conference games scheduled in 2025. We have to get rid of 4 of them.

Maybe this thread is good place to chew on this comment that I read this earlier today in our lax forum:

From econalum:

"Many MAC colleges are in financial trouble due to falling enrollments. I am dubious that MLAX will be added anytime soon. If anything, I expect MAC schools to start cutting low/no revenue sports."

(Bold portions are added by me. OC)
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

I didn't see any links cited by him with that comment. Quick Google search does have articles on how MAC schools lost out of millions due to cancelled (and maybe now rescheduled) Covid era games with Power5 conferences.
