Poll: Favorite Fight - #1 Chaney vs. Calipari- 1990 or #2 Chaney vs. Calipari - 1994

A few years ago when I watched the One and Not Done 30 for 30 Doc on Coach Cal, they covered both fights between Cal and Chaney even though most people only remember the 1994 fight. As a Sophmore, I was at the game at the cage against Temple (ranked #1 in 1988) who had All-American guard Mark Macon and 7’1 C Donald Hodge against up and comer UMass who hadn’t beat Temple ever and was looking to beat them for the first time, but lost in triple OT as Macon and Hodge combined for 60 points while McCoy/Herndon/Giles combined for 62 points. Probably the best game I ever saw at the cage competively. During that game, I was sitting behind the hoop on the south side when I noticed Chaney was pointing his finger at Cal and then all of the sudden refs were trying to break up Cal and Chaney as both were trying to get at each other for what seemed like 5 minutes. Great Game and Great Fight. Even though I was at the game in 1994, I and pretty much everyone else did not see the fight even because it happened in the green room, but was captured on film and played over and over again on ESPN and other stations. Today, Chaney would have been fired (he did say he would kill Cal!) and probably would have been charged with assault if Mike Williams hadn’t intervened though Cal went towards him as well. In the end, no harm, no foul as both coaches have/had legendary careers. My favorite is the 1990 fight because it was both a great fight and great game and really started the beginning of the true rivalry between UMass and Temple.

I was at the Cage for Chaney-Calipari I. The spontaneity of it in front of a full house made it more exciting.

The rematch was more of a jaw dropping moment, considering it took place after the game in front of limited audience and that Chaney had to go the green room to get it started.

More people got to see this one because it was recorded and made it to SportsCenter as a stand alone event, as opposed to something the evolved spontaneously from the heat of the game.

I think it was at the 1990 game when someone through a roll of toilet paper and hit Chaney in the head. He had to be restrained from going up into the stands.

There were some great games at the Cage in 1989-1990 against UConn, West Virginia, Temple and URI to name a few. They should have built the Mullins Center to be around 7,000 and more compact as the environment at the Cage was never duplicated even during the Cal years at the Mullins (i.e. Cage - Paint coming off the ceiling, scoreboard smoking, and crowds always over capacity).

Let's not forget (I did) how we won that game. Our all-time clutch player, and I shouldn't have to name him, made the winning basket with 3 seconds left.

I'm surprised that Cal and Mike Jarvis never had a confrontation....

Although, in Cal's 1st at UMass ('88-'89), the year GW went 1-27, with their lone win coming against UMass, John Kuester was their coach, not Mike Jarvis.

All these years later and I'm still not sure if Chaney says "kick" or "kiss"

Regardless, it was pretty good, and tame enough PR for the A10.
