Game 11, 2023-24: vs Old Dominion (DHC, 12/24)

Post by MikeUMA » Fri Dec 22, 2023 2:40 pm

On Sunday, we'll either face Temple or Old Dominion.
Temple lost to Nevada, 80-56
ODU lost to TCU, 111-87

Temple is favored by 3.5 over ODU today, at 7:30 Eastern on ESPN+

Our Sunday game will be at either 1:30 PM Eastern, or 3:30-ish (20 minutes after the 1:30 concludes). TBD on the channel, but ESPN+ has the stream for sure.

Plenty of UM/Temple history, but it would be the first time we've faced ODU.

Temple is currently 6-5 https://owlsports.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule
ODU is currently 3-7 https://odusports.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule

Any thoughts on ODU? I haven't looked at them except for who starts and who plays a lot of minutes. They are not the biggest team we've played with the tallest starter at 6'7. They go up an inch per player, starting at 6'3. The bench is 3 or 4 guys, none taller than 6'7, with 1 guy available at 6-11, but he rarely plays. We might see him against Josh.

don't know much about them but for what its worth - Kenpom has them at 219 by comparison Portland is 255 - UMass checks in at 107. I know some on here do not believe in these ratings, but I personally feel like it gives you a really good idea how good you really are. GA. Tech is 109 and we looked pretty equal to them - Portland on the other hand we proved we truly were 150 spots better than them - I see a similar game today - maybe not a 22 point win but a comfortable 12-15 point win.

i believe the RPI is a better measure because it uses a diminishing returns factor in blowout wins. Fro example, along the lines of a 15 pt win is the same a 25 pt win. Net and Kenpom both use the final score as the measure. In the RPI Umass is 76 this morning. Funny, i noticed James Madison is 70th in RPI but 30th in Net ranking. This tells me they had several blow out wins.. In the end Im in favor of whatever computer ranking gives UMass a higher ranking..LOL

Umass is -7.5 today. Really need this one to get some momentum heading into conference play. Beat Siena next week and 9-3 doesn’t look too bad.

These 2 wins (assuming today) will not be nearly as significant as wins over GT & Hawaii with a close loss to Nevada.

How the hell do you not know time on the shot clock on an out of bounds play?

I know they’re ahead 4-3, but they’re off to an uneven start.

They're double teaming Cohen and Cross. Other guys are going to have to step up.

Rough start. Offense is all over the place. Defense a step slow (probably more than one step) in transition especially. Feels like our third game in four days. ODU in same boat obviously.

When Davis is feeling it like he looks to be, I'd love to see him stay in there. Opens up Cohen & Cross inside or gives him looks if they double. Such a nice shot
