Who is your favorite UMass BBall Player of All Time?

Post by WillHerndonFan » Tue Nov 14, 2023 9:48 pm

Not sure if this topic has been covered in recent memory so here is my topic! We all know the best players that played at UMass, but who are the players that were truly fan favorites for a variety of reasons. Who is your favorite UMass BBall Player of all time?

Here is my favorite and you might have guessed it by my username:

Will Herndon - 1989-1992

During my sophmore year in 1989-1990, there was a buzz in the fall about this leaper from Pittsburg, PA who allegedly jumped over a VW Beetle and was transferring from Richmond to UMass and was not eligible until the Fall Semester ended. I believe his first game at the Cage in the Wintersession was against a good West Virginia team and he looked more like a an NFL Linebacker at 6’3” and. 220-240lbs. Early on he connected with an alley oop dunk from Anton Brown and continued to steal the show with multiple power dunks and injected an exciting element that made UMass games a must see.

My favorite dunk of all time was a game against LaSalle where an alley oop pass was to low and the big man for LaSalle caught it and in mid-year Herndon took it out of his hands and dunked it backwards. He appeared to hang in mid-air forever! If Herndon had played today, all of his incredible dunks would have been streamed and no one would forget him! The best part about Herndon was that he was a great team player!

Two words…Julius Erving!

Those of you who were at UMass when he was know what I’m talking about.

To those of you who weren’t, it’s like trying to explain how the Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan changed things forever, or in the words of John Sebastian:

I'll tell you about the magic, and it'll free your soul
But it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout rock 'n' roll! 8)

Julius Winfield Erving II
Followed when I was an elementary student in Pittsfield, went to Maine game on the Saturday before the Syracuse explosion.
Saw him speak (and faint) at the CYC Awards night in Pittsfield just after he had decided to leave UM for the Squires. Spoke with him at the Leaman tribute and he recalled the incident; it was his first time speaking in a public setting and I imagine that it wouldn’t be something you forgot.
Through the magic of eBay , I am the proud owner of a Erving 76ers t-shirt😁
My favorite story of JWEII is when he arrived late to a game in high school and Ray Wilson didn’t start him. The next day in school a teacher approached Coach Wilson and was so appreciative that JWEII had stopped and helped her shovel her car out. JWSII never mentioned that as the reason why he was late, he just sat out for being late and moved on!!

Julius is my favorite all time hoops player. I am just too young to have seen him at Umass unfortunately.

For me it is a three way tie between, Harper Williams, Carmelo Travieso, and Lou Roe. Lots of others were great to follow and watch but those three were special in their own way.

I've tried, but I can't narrow it down to 1, sorry.

Whoever has a son who is a great hoops prospect and is also considering UMass...that's who I'm going with. Looking at the future here!

If none, I'll also go with Herndon. Mike Williams a close second.

Great story.

I was at the 1995 Basketball Hall of Fane enshrinement dinner at the Springfield Civic Center. I wanted to get Kevin McHale’s autograph. He had body guards..I had to give the body guard my program; he gave it to Kevin to sign and then returned it to me.

On the back to my table I saw Julius, who was there to escort Cheryl Miller as she was enshrined, sitting at his table. I approached him to ask for his autograph. He pushed a chair out and said, ‘Have a seat.’ He signed my program and we sat and shot the shit for a while! A cool, humble guy! 8)

Harper…a leader that directed the team on both offense and defense

I also think Donta Bright deserves a mention as he came here a highly acclaimed recruit but was willing to sacrifice for the good of the team

Tough for me to pick just one favorite.

In the modern era Harper Williams and Jimmy McCoy are at the top for me.

Before that Mike Pyatt and Carl Smith.
