The addition of Herndon mid-season as a sophomore made this team complete as he could do it all at 6’3” including winning the tipoff. I remember the game I got hooked on will the thrill was against WVU when I was a sophomore. Me and my Umass friends made the trek to the cage during winter session and watched Will put on a dunkfest. Every game after that was a must see because of the addition of Herndon. He got so much press for his dunks and 48” vertical that the Boston Globe ran a front page sports piece on him I believe in 1991-1992. Wish I had a pdf of that article!Quann wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2024 8:44 amMan looking back, that team was loaded. Loved the brown to Herndon alley oops. This was my first year of me becoming a huge umass hoops fan with both my parents being alums. I was eleven years old at the time.LS71 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 3:23 pmEasily my favorite UMass team of them all. And I've told Harper that! If you look "HEART" up on the dictionary, you'll see a picture of this team!WillHerndonFan wrote: ↑Sun Apr 21, 2024 8:23 pm
The 1991-1992 team is probably the best TEAM in UMass history given it had no big time recruits starting as onlly Freshman Lou roe was highly recruited. Went 30-5 that year with McCoy, Brown, Herndon, Barbee and Williams with no one over 6’7 and Herndon playing power forward at 6’3”. Maybe Coach Cals best work as a UMass coach!![]()

Predictably, social media is not a happy place for Calipari right now. Arkansas lost at LSU last night and is off to an 0-4 start in the SEC.
Crazy high expectations seem to have followed Cal from Lexington KY to Fayetteville AR. The Razorbacks' last 4 games, with NET ratings:
at 4 Tennessee
16 Ole Miss
7 Florida
at 68 LSU
OK maybe the LSU game they could have / should have won, but man, that's a tough crowd if you're getting crap for losing to a slate like that.

Re: KAEO: John Calipari
Just wanted to chime in briefly from Bangkok Thailand…. that ‘91/ 92 team with the players mentioned above was probably my favorite team in any sport at any level in my 68 yrs on this planet. The job that Cal did with that group was unbelievable, and wouldn’t have been possible without the Refuse to Lose warrior mentality of the players and rabid fans packed into the raging Cage. The band, national media attention, and student support, was unreal. We saw every home game back then ( as well as several on the road) after waiting 2 hrs outside so we could sit (stand) in the 1st row right behind the bench…. we heard and saw everything that transpired on the bench and on the court….. can’t put into words how special those days were.
Harper Williams howls as he rips down another critical rebound in front of a raging owl faced John Chaney and immediately outlets to a racing, poker faced Anton Brown who surges up the court and non chalantly lifts an ollie oop pass high above the rim to a high flying Wil Herndon who violently flushes it through the hoop like he has so many times before to the deafening roar of the enraged fans packed into the tiny arena like sardines. Chaney would make the mistake of calling a time out and the deafening roar intensified to the point of paint chips snowing down from the ceiling as the scoreboard swayed back and forth….. all of this flowed in perfect harmony as it had so many times before with this beloved, historic band of overachievers and their out of their minds fans while the band complimented the moment with another blaring rendition of their signature song …. The Rage in the Cage!!!!

Re: KAEO: John Calipari
Arkansas wins 89-79.
Cal looks like he’s lost some weight.
Announcer said this was Cal’s first trip to Rupp as an opponent.
We UMass fans know that’s not true. That said, I don’t think UMass beat them in that building. The win to open the FF4 season was in a tournament at Auburn Hills, Michigan.
Ironic that one of Cal’s biggest wins at UMass was over Arkansas in Springfield. Now he goes into Rupp as the coach of Arkansas and gets what can certainly be called his biggest win (so far) at Arkansas!

Cal gives Cats a whooping at Rupp ! 89-79
Re: KAEO: John Calipari
Correct, UMass is 0-2 at Rupp. Coincidentally, each respective UMass coach had some kind of Kentucky connection.
Calipari lost there in 1991, ended up coaching for UK later.
Travis Ford lost there in 2006. Travis was a UK player.
