Game 29, 2022-23: at Duquesne (3/1)

Post by MikeUMA » Mon Feb 27, 2023 2:00 pm

UM's first visit to Duquesne's UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse coming up on Wednesday. Technically it's a refurbished building, the updated Palumbo Center.

Duq still has a lot to play for, currently in 5th in the standings after tie-breakers with GW and GMU, all at 9-7. I think there's still a chance Duq could get up to double-bye territory, but they'd need to win out at a minimum.

UMass is pretty much locked into Day 1 for the tournament at this point. At 5-11, best they could do is get to 7-11, but there are already 4 other teams with 7 wins, and they'll hold many of the tiebreaker scenarios with us anyway.

Will be interesting to see if Cross or Fernandes are available / if they play in the rest of this season that's all but done. I'll always cheer for us, and miracles happen, but it's not looking favorable.

I chuckled when I read that their gym is called the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Cooper Fieldhouse.

If UConn Health wants to pay us 5m$ a year to have their name on the stadium, who is saying no? Kinda cool it is named for Chuck Cooper the first black drafted player by an NBA team.

Dukes currently favored by 9 and a very high 149 O/U

I may sprinkle a little lunch money on the under.... this smells like a 72-62 kind of game

Duq stumbled this weekend, dropping a 71-67 decision at home to Davidson. Cats were up 14 at the half and Duq couldn't fully recover.

I mean, sure, but I still chuckled either way. This would be more like if Holy Cross' gym was named UMass Chan Gymnasium.

The Cooper part is def a high honor, no doubt about that.

Good for the Dukes, they're having a heck of a season. They play with such fire and tenacity, they're pretty high on my list of teams that I don't want to see in Brooklyn. I have no idea how we beat them the first time around.

That arena is small with only 3,500 seats, but man it looks sweet. I would kill for some windows and natural lighting in the Mullins Center. Are those luxury boxes up at the top too? I like it, a lot.

Sometimes it's matchups. They don't have dominant bigs which helps us. 40% of their shots are from beyond the arc (they are normally pretty good), but if they are off they have trouble scoring. They also commit a lot of fouls. The oppositions takes about 5 more free throws per game than they do.
These are all conference stats, not full season stats.
Starting lineup is:
5'8
6'2
6'3
6'7 (250)
6'8 (200)
Bench is: 6'7 (230), 6'10 (240), 6'6 and 5'9

^ the fouling was my recollection. They play such tight in your face defense that they get called for a lot of touch fouls

Michael Bergman has been pretty good about doing pre-game reports, usually with clips directly from Frank. Nothing yet about the Duq game and an injury report, but maybe later today.
