URI is bad and they played poorly on top of it, but that's still a great win and the UMass players & staff both did great and deserve a lot of credit. Gapare played more under control, RJ played within the offense, and Keon is quickly becoming a steady hand at point guard.
I'm no expert, but the zone D today looked a little different than what we're used to seeing. Was it fundamentally different, or just executed better by the players?

believe it was a 1-1-3 which really morphs into a 2-3.NilesGold wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 7:06 pmURI is bad and they played poorly on top of it, but that's still a great win and the UMass players & staff both did great and deserve a lot of credit. Very happy with the change from Tuesday night to today's consistent intensity. The two bigs and the freshman. Did not hear how long Cross will be out, but hoping for a good run and a strong A10 tourney showing.
Go UMass!!

Could it have been a 3-2? I rewatched a little of the game, and looked up some diagrams of a 1-1-3 and it looked different. Then I saw a diagram of a 3-2 and it looked much more like that.PreecherJenkins wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 8:11 pmbelieve it was a 1-1-3 which really morphs into a 2-3.NilesGold wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 7:06 pmURI is bad and they played poorly on top of it, but that's still a great win and the UMass players & staff both did great and deserve a lot of credit. It was a 1-2-2, which is essentially a 3-2, but played with 1-3-1 mentality. It is the same zone they have played for the most part. They just finally executed it. I think in part to having both Kante and Leveque on the floor at the same time. The big difference between a 1-3-1 and 1-2-2- is you don’t need the super athletic guy running the baseline. There is no way to run a 1-3-1 with both Kante and Leveque on the floor, neither is built to play the baseline.NilesGold wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 9:02 pmCould it have been a 3-2? TJ played a great game without scoring. he hustled his ass off.69MG wrote: ↑Sat Feb 18, 2023 4:30 pmYou beat me to the punch. I find that incredible, and they were 17/30 from the field. I really thought we would need TJ to have another of his "I'm from Rhode Island and I can score at will here" games, but everyone else picked up the slack. Gianni was active (5 boards) and even though Wildens didn't have a great offensive game, he had 3 blocks and pretty much neutralized Tchikou.
Gapare, 7 boards to go with his 11 points (2-4 from 3) and only 2 turnovers. That's more like what we need to see from him. Nelson, I'm pretty sure you check in here. So happy for your son!
I could talk about this one a lot, but we all saw it or heard it. Maybe some momentum for Dayton on Wednesday.

sSpeaking of Leveque, if he had better coordination, he would be a dominate A10 player.

So that's what it looks like when a team mails it in and quits on the season. I really thought URI was going to give us more of a fight than they did considering they played VCU so tight the other day, but man, they looked awful.
I don't know what clicked with the group that was available yesterday, maybe desperation, maybe hard coaching, but whatever it was, we need more of that. This is the team I've been expecting to see all year from an effort perspective. Great to see the freshmen show what they can do, and really nice to see Gianni have a good game. When I go to the Mullins Center, he usually looks engaged in timeout huddles and has been a good cheerleader even though he hasn't played much.
Great game, it's good to get some positive vibes around this team. My expectations are still low given the injury situation, but I'm hoping that today's effort wasn't an anomaly. Bring that every day and you give yourself a chance. Next up - Dayton.

I thought we were going to get smoked with all the injuries. That was a very pleasant surprise on Saturday. Always nice to win down there.

The Collective has Luis as their #1 priority. I'm not on their board but I am a member. They have set up a special project to make sure RJ gets a competitive NIL deal. If you can afford to give, this is a good cause.
