Game 20, 2022-23: Richmond (1/25)

Post by MikeUMA » Sun Jan 22, 2023 11:40 pm

Good Lord, this game cannot get here soon enough.

Richmond at Mullins on Wednesday at 7. NESN and ESPN+ will have it, but go if you can. Students are still on break and we could use a decent crowd.

UR is currently 11-9 / 4-3 (in a 3-way tie for 5th). They were predicted to finish 7th, so they're right on par. (We were picked 8th, so lots of work to do.)

UR is 2-7 outside of the Robins Center, 1-5 in true away games.

They started 3-1 in the league before going 1-2 recently. Their last outing was hosting VCU on Friday, and the Spiders fell 74-62.

Common opponents so far:
GW - UM lost there 81-73 (with Noah), UR won at home 73-63.
Bona - UM lost there 83-64 (with Noah), UR lost there 71-63.
Rhody - UM won at home 75-65 (without Noah), UR won at home 64-57.

UR is led by Tyler Burton (6'7 215 Sr F), with 19.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 1.7 spg. Scoring wise, he's 2nd in the A-15 (behind GW's James Bishop). Burton is a native of Uxbridge. Defensively, I'm guessing Cross will get him most of the time.

Coach Chris Mooney does his radio show tomorrow night if you want to hear his comments

Agreed! And despite all my griping and complaining, I'm still on board and support this team. I'll be there. Preliminary forecast looks like some potential snow, maybe 2-4" through the afternoon and evening commute.

Thankfully Grant Golden, Jacob Gilyard, and Nathan Cato have all finally exhausted their eligibility for the much-maligned Chris Mooney, but they still have Tyler Burton, Matt Grace, and The Goooooosee, Andre Gustavson back from last years round of 32 team.

We know what Richmond is. It is the Princeton style offense that takes Quinn (7 footer) and Matt Grace (Grant Golden Lite) on the top of the floor throwing bounce passes to the back door. If Mr. 1.70m can have his team stay disciplined for 40 minutes this is a winnable game. If UMass does not defend they will not win.

Here is a fun trivia without looking when was UMass' last win in Richmond's Robins Center?

Very tough opponent again. Worry about the big, talented front court: starting Quinn (7 footer), Grace (big 6'9") and Burton (size/builld a lot like Matt Cross and plays similar; he almost went pro and is by far their best player). Their bigs can all shoot 3s, although not terribly reliable unless left open. They will all shoot right over someone like 6'5 Brandon Martin (inside and out). Need a great game from Wildens. Combine UR's front court with the unusual Princeton-like back cuts and this will be very tough. Their guards aren't great

Maybe some good news? This was posted yesterday at practice. #11 in uniform and on the court.

@kylegrbwsk
Noah Fernandes practiced for 40-45 today. It'll determine how he responds to that if he plays tomorrow. Frank Martin said he looked 'pretty good' out there

We have two more opportunities this month to get this pointed in the right direction. Both at home. It starts tonight.

if we've learned anything these past few days, players and coaches definitely read the board and whats said on Twitter and they take it personally. With the exception of a few negative player posts I hope when they do read these posts they realize how much we all care about them and the program and it galvanizes this team and they go on a little run. And if they take it the wrong way and feel like its an us against the world mentality, thats fine too - whatever it takes to turn this around is ok by me.

I don't feel great about our chances tonight - teams like Richmond typically give us problems but - with whats gone on the past week or so and hopefully with the return of Noah I think we come out on top. I'll be there tonight - but with the expected bad weather and no students, I'd be surprised if there are 1000 in the building tonight.

I think they kick ass and take names tonight. Unfortunately, not many will likely be there to see it in person with the snow.

Of course they read it, they have for years.
