Game 12, 2022-23: Dartmouth (12/20)
Game 12, 2022-23: Dartmouth (12/20)
Dartmouth comes to town on Tuesday, last game before Christmas and an 11-day layoff until Atlantic 10 play starts at Bona on 12/31.
A post-game report from today says Noah is doubtful for Tuesday, and ideally we shouldn't need him. The Big Green are currently 4-9 on the season. Their wins:
Mass College of Liberal Arts (D3)
John Buggs and UTSA (that one's a bummer)
Northern Vermont - Johnson (D3)
CSU Bakersfield (pre-season picked 8th of 11 in the Big West)
Only the UTSA win was away from Hanover NH.

Game is on NESN, Tuesday game in the holiday week, crowd will be sparse.

Let's rebound nicely. Part of becoming a great team is learning to deal with adversity and gaining confidence/experience.

We have no business losing this game.
Re: Game 12, 2022-23: Dartmouth (12/20)
Agreed. We should beat them by double digits even without Noah. The game I'm looking at is the first A10 game @SBU. I think we're a little better than them, but not all that much. We've lost 9 in a row to them and most of the games up there haven't been close. If we can win up there I'll feel a lot better about the team.
They have an entirely new roster so we can't use the "just getting used to each other" excuse. They play 9 guys; 6 transfers and 3 freshmen.

Another green opponent who might be big, but not mean like our last opponent. Need a big win going away to finish out the non-conference slate.
Noah playing or not playing shouldn't matter in the outcome of the game, but I wouldn't mind seeing him get a little bit of playing time if he's able to go and it won't set him back further by playing 5 or 10 minutes.

Would really like to see something from Diggins in this one. I’m often miffed by some of Frank’s comments, and I was when he talked about Diggins needing to find his joy. But I can see it now. He’s clearly very talented but he looks lost and like he’s not having a good time. I hope he can find a spark and start getting comfortable.

Frank needs to "find his (own) joy." Maybe if he didn't rip ''em (all the young guys)a new one every time they made mistakes they could find some joy out there. Yes, after a couple freshman mistakes, take 'em out of the game and explain why. But don't absolutely humiliate them as Frank has been doing in front of 3-4,000 witnesses and national tv audiences.
Outside the basketball arena, UMass faculty, staff and students would all have to answer for their behavior if they treated each like that. Or is the right model we should be looking to - U.S. Marines boot camp?

HA! I've been waiting for this post since the day Frank was rumored for the job. I'm shocked it took til December before someone got all flustered about his style of coaching.
Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades

Re: Game 12, 2022-23: Dartmouth (12/20)
was going to say the same thing when I saw that post. This will be the reason Frank leaves - people getting butt hurt because he yells at a player - oh no not that! His former players all seem to love him - Weeks and DD's parents have posted stuff on Twitter about how much they respect Frank and how he makes the kids accountable for their mistakes so if parents are ok with it, you should too. The kids know full well that he yells but they also know he is going to make them a better player and he will help them succeed outside of basketball. People need to calm down and just let Frank be Frank.

Maybe that’s the issue with Diggins, maybe not. Frank’s not a mystery, any player coming here knows they’re going to get screamed at. If it’s not for them, they can find a new school next year.
By bringing in Frank Martin, Bamford handed him the UMass program, for better or worse. The program’s profile has gone way up, roster has gotten much better, and so have the results so far. With that comes Frank’s style, which I personally don’t love but it gets results and I’m happy he’s here. I look at the playing time situation the same way. Frank’s doing what he wants and he doesn’t feel he needs to answer to anyone about it. I don’t like his sensitivity level with people having questions about this as long as no one’s crossing a personal boundary. But again, he’s our guy now.
