Game 6, 2022-23: at South Florida (11/29)

Post by thecaptain » Mon Nov 21, 2022 3:55 pm

Didn't see a thread on this yet, so hopefully it's cool that I started it.

USF is currently 0-4 and has two games before we play them - including today vs UAB. Per Rothstein, they will be missing their best player and leading scorer, Keyshawn Bryant (https://twitter.com/JonRothstein/status ... XopoWr2fYQ). Since it is an "undisclosed" reason, it might be something to keep an eye on.

Regardless, I hope this is a game we take care of business, and not look ahead to Harvard.

Big gap until the next game again - seemed to not be a factor for us during the tournament, since ya know, we won it and all.

Are the players staying on campus or going home to enjoy Thanksgiving with their families?

Keyshawn played for Frank last year at SC. He was a target for us when Frank got the job.

I hope Tafara isn't going home, we might not get him back! :D

not surprising, USF falls to UAB by 15. They have St. Joe's next to wrap up the Sunshine Slam tournament.

This will be a must win if we want to stay on the right side of the computer rankings. Will be a good test going against a team that will be 1-5 at best after winning the tourney. Will they keep the intensity up? I think they will.

I think they're all hungry to be a winning group and can't see Frank letting them get complacent. Its UMass time baby!!

Funny you say that - I fear they will come out flat after a long layoff. This is (as you just alluded to) where Frank truly earns his money.

The team is off to a good start, I am sure there are more people in the player's ear now telling them how good they are. They need block that noise out and stay focused. I have seen it happen far far too many times from travelling middle school teams through college age. Get a little too confident and cocky then lose a game you should not.

We have no track record on this coach and team yet, but human nature dictates that this can easily happen. I am not being negative, just looking at the potential pitfalls for a young and still gelling team.

I hope they go down there and blow their doors off and prove my theory wrong.

USF's season has been a "yeesh" so far, at 0-5.
They've lost home games to SE Missouri State (Ohio Valley), Stetson (Atlantic Sun), and Austin Peay (A-Sun).
Lost last night to UAB in Daytona by 15.
The one not so bad was an 8-point loss at #15 Auburn.

Bulls play Saint Joe's tonight at 6:30 in Daytona. FloHoops has it, so no one will be watching. The Hawks, who were picked to finish 13th in the A-15, are favored by 1½.

Bulls have another home game before us: Friday at 2 PM vs St. Francis Brooklyn. ESPN+ will have that.

Bulls were picked 9th in the 11-team AAC pre-season poll.

This looks to be Brian Gregory's last season in Tampa. In his 6th now, he's 65-94, and had a 8-23 season last year. Bulls went 24-14 in his second season, but have been sub-500 in all others.

Brian Gregory has coached at Dayton, Georgia Tech, and USF for a combined 19 seasons and has made 2 NCAA tournaments.

Enough said.

Also worth noting that one of those tournaments was pretty much with Oliver Purnell's players, the core group from their 2002-03 24-6 team. 4 of the 5 top scorers in that group came back to play for Gregory.
