I haven't seen it officially listed anywhere but I assumed DK is coaching the defense and the D played poorly the last few min which could be why DK was more vocal.

Kellogg eventually stood up and said something - my first thought was Frank trying to let them figure it out and is DK stepping on his toes - or was it a test to see which one of his assistants was going to step up and be a leader. DK has been very vocal so far and has in my opinion emerged as the 2nd in charge, which is surprising based on how late he joined the staff. Ricky Harris has even gathered the guards during a TO and gotten in their faces. I know I do not see the practices but it seems as though the guys Frank brought from SC don't do a heck of a lot during the games - maybe they know better not to? Which brings me to my earlier thought - was DK stepping on Franks toes there?
I don’t think so. With all the new faces on this team, both players and coaches, I think FM is trying to get them all to bond and grow together before the A10 schedule begins, picking his spots when to step away. You don’t see many teams with all new players and staff in year one of a rebuild. This team has found ways to win while learning a new system and each other’s nuances. As they play and practice together I think this team could be a program opponents won’t want to play by seasons end.

5-1 with 3 wins on a neutral site and 1 on the road is a great start.

They already don't want to play us. That's why we added Dartmouth, CCSU and Albany.

I think we all need to be pretty satisfied right now. Perfect, by no means. But, after the last several years, it is nice to see. This game would have been a double digit loss in recent years, but was a win tonight. We are going to see some ups and downs this season, but I feel like we are going in the right direction, not just hoping we are going in the right direction.

There is no stronger deodorant than winning.

Wanting a circa 1992-1996 run is always out there, but expecting it is unreasonable. This team is the first one since Ford's teams that is truly fun to watch. You feel like they can hang in almost any game, and they look like a team that can play some games in the 3rd week of March for a change.

I was never a fan of DKs tourney team - that was underachieving and smoke an mirrors personified. The second half of that season was so disappointing and revealed the largest flaws - inability to evolve. Everyone figured them out and DK did not adjust.

The one thing we have not seen yet is if Frank has that ability (here at least). We are off the a nice start and there seems to be some buzz growing. We can only hope these boys don't hit a wall.

That said - yes we should be pretty satisfied so far.

So I was front row behind the bench.

Overall, I just think the team and coaching staff are not completely on the same page as of yet. Things I saw/heard:

1. Coach Martin bitch guys out as stated
2. Coach Martin tell someone not to bother making the trip next time.
3. An assistant coach would always go over to players after the chewing's out to make sure they where on the same page with what the expectation was.
4. Players wandering out of huddles not knowing they were they were supposed to go, or if they were in.(an assistant is literally holding up a board with names and numbers on it)
5. Lots of mistake/sub/coach/back in in a few minutes. Probably for every player that played. REALLY minds me of Cal in that respect. Especially early in seasons.
6. Players didn't all seem to understand the hand signals of what was being called.
7. Players playing man when the rest of the team was in a zone.
8. Players running the plays but not necessarily getting to the right spots. (So for instance, moving out to the wing, but not high enough for an easy pass, happened sooooooooooooo many times. you could say it was the defense but if the players would have moved up to be even with the top of the key rather than the foul line, they would have been open)
9. Coach seemingly let the players figure out the the issue rather than using timeouts to stop runs by USF (would be a problem with a better team).
10. Coaches, mmm, questioning the players were doing to each other(my wording here is the most GENTLE interpretation of how this was actually questioned)
11. Player frustration with each other and coaches
12. The two missed free throws late were due to one of the guards going back and forth with the coaches in regards what the guards were doing to break the pressure

All in all, we should have put that team away. Just let them hang around. We played very poorly for long long stretches but USF wasn't good enough to capitalize. We are going to have a problem in the paint with bigger bodies.

Overall, Medium timers might recall when I think in '92 preseason, the whole team shaved their heads because they said Cal was running things like a boot camp, it kind of has that vibe.

That is the vibe.

Now correct me if I wrong, but they haven't played in a week, the coaching staff may have put a bunch new stuff.

Yeah it was a little over a week.. you are right.. you can tell it's still a work in progress. That's why being 5-1 at this point is encouraging. They can and hopefully should get a lot better as they gel. I think the staff is still trying to figure out what they have.

Looked like Allen was the scout guy this game, but this is entirely possible.

Man, sometimes we complain about the lack of local coverage, but I was looking on TampaBay.com, which is backed by the main newspaper in town, and absolutely nothing about USF hoop. It's all USF football.
