Good comparison. To me, it seems like some fans are overfixated on his last name. BM isn't a scorer, but he can defend and he is giving 100% when he's on the floor. He's a presence and I really fail to see how he's NOT helping the team when he's out there. If I had to eyeball one player on the starting 5 who is not currently earning minutes, I don't think it would be BM. Given the substitution and rotation schemes Frank is now deploying, I have absolutely no problem at all with BM getting his current minutes and burn.69MG wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 10:44 am
Frank's kid is a better player than a lot of us are feeling. Remember Mike Babul? That's my comp to Brandon. He plays good D, gets rebounds and he's a good passer. He's our 2nd leading rebounder and has the 4th best A/TO ratio. I like him for 10-15 minutes a game. taking just 2 or 3 shots.
But I understand we have to complain about something as fans. I guess it's either this or not all players clapping as enthusiastically as they could during yesterday's awards ceremony.
Re: Game 5, 2022-23: vs Charlotte (11/20, Myrtle Beach Championship)
I agree, Babul was a different player, better offensively. I think Frank trusts BM right now because he knows him better, and he's a tough kidTruBluMaroon wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 11:22 amCompletely disagree with your comparison. Mike Babul was a starter for a significantly better team and was All A10 Defensive Team for three (3) seasons. Also see that you chose not to mention the 17% FG percent for BMartin. Perhaps his turnover numbers are low as a result of taking bad shots instead of passing….69MG wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 10:44 amOld Cage wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 8:15 am
We are playing ten regularly, which I love. Two of the three not in that rotation are Gapare and Gianni. I assume that the third is Woodley returning at some point, but maybe Frank sees something from one of the walk-ons (we have three on the roster). Wouldn't that be nice.

BM adds value to this team. He rebounds, keeps balls alive on the glass, he's got experience with playing for Frank, strong kid, and a positive attitude on the floor. He won't challenge TJ in a shooting contest (and I'm sure he knows that), but since losing a big body in Woodley, he gives us another physical guy in the frontcourt. As long as he's not trying to be something he's not, I'm good with him on the floor as Frank sees fit. We're winning right?

I'm not saying that it is what I expect. Just that if we do end up being legit, our non-con SOS won't be an issue.UMass1927 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 11:40 amI need to see a lot more before we start talking NCAA tournament resume. We just played two (maybe three) legit teams in Myrtle, Towson is a tourney caliber team, and Hofstra and North Texas are more than solid mid-majors. The schedule is good enough for an at-large bid if we win the games and finish top four in the league.

Brandon Martin plays because he knows what his father wants system wise and individually. I believe as Luis becomes more indoctrinated into the Martin system the less you will see of Brandon.Floyd wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 12:40 pmI agree, Babul was a different player, better offensively. ^ I agree with this. Brandon has been heavily involved early on because he is a known commodity, plays smart and hard, and is a good tone setter for the younger guys. RJ could be a guy to take minutes from him, but I also see Gapare being that guy to eat up some of Brandon's minutes once he gets settled and starts to assert himself.

Martin is solid, but in pure basketball ability he is about 10th on that roster. Most people can see that; my only concern is that it could become a distraction - since he is the coach's kid. I am NOT saying it will happen, and if RJ and Gapare do end up with more minutes at his expense, that will alleviate any potential issue all by itself.

Look, say whatever you'd like about Frank's kid but Mike Babul was a three time all first team defender if memory serves. A true lockdown defender who would shut down some of the best guards and small forwards in America quite regularly. Brandon is fine and 10 or 12 minutes a night will help spell relief for other guys, particularly with Woodley gone for the year. But comparable to Mike Babul? That's just a nonsensical bit of revisionist history.

Your comparing apples to oranges. Rutgers can play an easy non-con schedule because their conference schedule is loaded - currently 6 in the Top 25, 8 in the Top 30. While the A10 boasts a few teams close to that level, the breadth of the strong programs in the B10 is at another level.inthescoop wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 10:50 am Sounds like I'm in the minority but if you look at other teams, I don't think our out of conference schedule is weak at all.
For example, Rutgers OOC schedule:
Columbia
Sacred Heart
UMass Lowell
Temple
Rider
Central Connecticut State
Bucknell
Coppin State

I humbly retract my comparison of Martin to Babul. Mike was by far the better player. I do still stand by my feeling that Brandon is worth 10-15 minutes at this time. When (not if) Gapare gets up to speed he ought to get 25 a game. That's going to take minutes away from a couple of people. I would guess that Brandon is one of them. The other one is tougher to call.

Can play an easy non-conference schedule? Tell that to the committee!BR72 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 5:11 pmYour comparing apples to oranges. The schedule was about right when it was created. UMass had a new coach and significant roster turnover.
Seems to me it’s a good mix of challenging and not so challenging to give FM an opportunity to see what he’s got as he prepares for the conference.
The West Virginia series is a clear indication that future non-con schedules will be tougher.
