Now that was fun to watch! That was a solid gutsy win by a team that grinded it out and didn’t panic when they were down 10 late - they fought thru it and got the W.
Playing hard nose D will get you wins and playing together is nice to see. The entire game they picked up full court and pressured the guards and they fought on the glass for every rebound and dove on the floor for every loose ball. Great to see a UMass team play with Pride! A lot to be proud of. A great team win on an incredible last second shot.Go UMass!

The thing is too, that Frank is playing a long bench and lots of guys are involved. Just brings this team together more. Carving the identity
Time to Win

Does coaching matter? Remember last year when we questioned every substitution and lineup?
BTW, Noah is starting to enter the Mike Williams, etc. conversation.Andrew Callagy

With 8:41 left, Frank went to the Noah, Diggins, TJ, Cross, and Kante lineup for the remainder of the game. UMass went on a 19-6 run and outscored Murray State by 10 overall

^ & ^^ 12 played yesterday and 11 played today. Excellent.
That was one of the greatest shots in UMass Hoops history! Mikey Williams-esque.

"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

I'm glad I was wrong when I doubted that Cross would play today the way he limped off the court yesterday. The kid is a warrior (14 boards, 4 assists).

I had to have looked this up at some point -- the last time UMass shot this poorly from the field in a win. Today was 24-74 or 32.4%.
I found 32.8% in a 57-49 win at Fordham Feb. 22, 2020.
Will keep digging. Whatever it takes, right?
EDIT: 31.5% vs. URI, March 13, 2014, a 65-61 win. And that was the second round of the A-10 Tournament.

I’m genuinely confused on what to do with WL. Kante is clearly the better player right now and should be starting.

42% from 3 was the difference. Murray was 21% with roughly same number of shots taken.DirSport wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 5:33 pm I had to have looked this up at some point -- the last time UMass shot this poorly from the field in a win. Today was 24-74 or 32.4%.

Ballsy win all around. If Frank can dial in the substitutions just right this is a very tough team I was internally screaming for Noah to pass but the kid is clutch, unreal shot. Also noticed Diggins ball pressure at the end. He could be one of the best 3 players on the team by the end of the year.
Tons of potential on this squad. Lots of different guys can make an impact night in and night out.

First time I've seen this group play together. Random thoughts:
1. Defensive intensity was awesome.
2. Cross is a big time player.
3. Kante has big time presence.
4. There is structure--I'll even call it logic--in the offense that seems to have been missing for the past 10-15 years.
5. Team is physical and aggressive.
6. FM fits the role of a HC perfectly. There's no questioning who the leader of this group is. DK fits the role of AC--strangely, this may all work out.
7. First time in YEARS I felt like we were playing up to the level of strong competition.
8. I can see this team doing some damage toward the end of the year, both in the A-10 and maybe even beyond.
9. This group feels like a TEAM in a way I haven't seen at UMass in a long, long, long time.

First, wow, just wow.
Second, it's starting to become clear to me that I like good defensive teams more than good offensive teams (I know, wouldn't it be nice to have both, but I won't get greedy). Good offensive teams can win or lose blowouts, but good defensive teams typically play close games and give themselves a chance. We're seeing that already, and we won both of these games on the strength and resilience of the defense.
Like I said after the Colorado game, this is another character building win. Two weeks ago this was just a talented group of guys, now they're becoming a team. On to the Sunday matchup.

to quote more or less everyone here "wow".
Noah didn't seem himself earlier. Never thought I'd hear announcers say "he's a 56% free throw shooter"--before he missed 2 of 4 with the technical FTs.
But man, does he have it when it counts the most. Amazing.
The team's deficiencies seem to be fixable. Upside is unlimited. Improvement still needed. For perspective, SLU totally blew out Murray State last week, although this early season stuff is hard to figure (see Colorado).
