If this holds up, shit is 'bout to get really out of control. Sometimes, you need to be careful what you ask for.
If this holds up there will no longer be college athletics as we know it. "Practice is at 8:00 am tomorrow". "No it isn't. Our new contract says no practices before noon."

This is an exaggeration, but what a potentially devastating blow to college sports. I can't phantom the crap that will go on, not to mention the possibility of schools paying players as employees.

This is not a court ruling, it's a National Labor Relations Board ruling. Big difference. Like everything else regarding NIL, the NCAA's governance model, etc., it will wind up in the courts. Also, unions are anathema in the South. You think the SEC schools would go for this?

Small schools will end up dropping divisions or dropping some sports all together. How many America east teams , for example, are going to want to spend another 500k on the basketball team

Dartmouth Men’s basketball would have trouble beating Amherst High School

Was thinking exactly the same thing. And will no doubt likely extend to other sports.

As well, kids could now be "fired" for poor job performance... Like I said, be careful what you ask for. Many things sound good on paper or as part of a power point presentation. But the actual reality of the execution, that's something else entirely.

People miss the point of athletics. It's to enhance the educational experience of the students and athletes. It also presents a way for people to go to college that may not have had an opportunity otherwise. You start introducing things like this, schools will potentially drop sports because they can't afford it. Fewer athletic opportunities, fewer kids going to college that could benefit, etc. Sounds like a win win for everyone....

I didn't read the article but the headline on Barstool Sports was - Pitino just saved college athletics - or something like that. The suggestion was that there be a cap on how much each school could spend on NIL each season.

Even though I didn't read the article - it seems like a pretty easy solution - might not be possible/legal to cap it - but why not?

That would be an antitrust violation. Would need to be collectively bargained with the players.

A lot more dominoes to fall.

We all know that schools find a way to get around this so I'm not sure how much impact this will have unless they find a way to investigate and enforce this.

A judge on Tuesday kept in place for now the NCAA's rules prohibiting name, image and likeness compensation from being used as a recruiting inducement, denying a request for a temporary restraining order by the states of Tennessee and Virginia.

I’m surprised Pitino is blaming things on the death of his brother in law in 9/11. He milked that excuse for years and years.

BUILD IT TOGETHER CAMPAIGN Launch

Securing UMass Basketball's Future in the NIL Era

The upcoming offseason presents a unique challenge in the evolving world of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) in college athletics. We are fortunate to have one of the most dynamic duos in the frontcourt, with both players (Matt Cross and Josh Cohen) having a year of eligibility left, along with other key pieces that we need to retain. Additionally, we want to be ready to take advantage of opportunities in the transfer portal if they arise. It's worth noting that our peers in the A10 and competitors nationally are all preparing for a competitive offseason in the NIL world.(See St. Bonaventure, this coming Saturdays opponent, call to action here with a $150,000+ campaign  https://awfulannouncing.com/college-bas ... ctive.html)

To be well-positioned for the challenges ahead, we believe we need to raise a competitive fund of approximately $400,000. This figure represents more than double our budget for the current year. However, at this point, we are short of reaching this goal, and that's where we need your help.

We have less than a month until the transfer portal opens, the day after Selection Sunday. While we enjoy the most successful UMass team in 10 years, we have to face reality. The $175,000 budget we had for this current season will not cut it to keep the players we want around, plus we want to be BUYERS not SELLERS in the transfer portal, presenting opportunities to transfers (while following NCAA rules and regulations). We need a little over $200,000 to reach our goal of $400,000 for next year. We have hesitated to make this number public before, but it is an absolute necessity to stress the urgency.

This team could look a lot different in just 5 weeks if we don't do our job as supporters of the program. There is no reason to sugarcoat it anymore. The time is NOW to step up and work together to advance the interests of the program.

How can you help?

1. JOIN or INCREASE your monthly commitment or make a one-time contribution OR pledge to our cause. Pledges can be paid over time, but must be fulfilled by January 30th, 2025.

2. Encourage your business to join us as a supporter or recruit other businesses to join our efforts.

3. Rally fellow fans to become members of the UMass Collective.
