Shot the ball terrible and got out rebounded.. that's pretty much it.. they have a week to fix whatever issue there is.

Re: Game 2, 2022-23: Towson (11/10)
Kyle Grabowski summed things up pretty well in his Gazette article:
This game was there for the taking. Towson didn't exactly set the world on fire in the 2nd half, and UMass just couldn't buy a bucket. I think Brandon Martin has a role on this team, but not a 20 minute role, especially when we need offense. He is so limited offensively. He played 20 minutes to TJ's 12. Swap those next time out, please and thank you.The Minutemen didn’t help themselves with easy opportunities. They were 12-of-22 from the free throw and missed 17 layups

yes more weeks and less Martin. I am concerned that Fernandes is not gelling with Martin as coach as he looked complacent out there. I think Fernandes should be on the court for 32+ mins.

It should be one where the coaching staff will get a much better sense of who they are currently and what really needs to be the focus in practice over the next week heading into the Invitational slate.
Well..... at least I got the ugly part right. Jesus. Pretty much the opposite of Monday... we got outworked in what seemed like every aspect of the game, and did not take advantage of the easy things (FTs, layups/easy looks). The rotation seems to be a mess as well, though that I'm not surprised by.
We've been down this path before... new roster, new coach/new scheme with assistants.... it is going to take time. FM needs to figure out his roster and substitution patterns/minutes, and the players still need to figure out how to play with each other in real game situations. Last night was very ugly, but I think this specific team will improve, and I very much still think the program is in very good hands.

Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades

The game was ugly, the box score was uglier. 3 starters (Weeks, Martin, Luis) shot a combined 0-20 from the floor, starters overall 4-32. Oof.

Dude your 0.083 batting average continues to drop - you are even making Bobby Dalbec look like a decent hitter. You need to stay out of the prognostication business for a while.

Less than opening night? Oooof, that’s disappointing. Sets a really bad precedent for the team before the tip off.mdogt12 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 10, 2022 9:31 pm https://twitter.com/mlbergman_/status/1 ... py1VQLNFCA

I watched the game on replay. Made it through the first half and then Wildens' missed bunny to start the 2nd. Fast forwarded the rest of the way hoping they'd get the score close but no. Preface being I didn't see the whole game.
Couple thoughts. Really disappointing student turnout. Surprising even for UMass.
Agree with everyone else that Frank's rotations were a mess. I'm OK with running 10 guys against CCSU and Dartmouth but it would have been nice to win this game, especially if they have sights set on postseason play. He did not give them a chance to win with his substitutions. The "2nd unit" took the lead in the first half and once he took them out they never got back into the game.
I saw on Twitter someone say the lineup should be Noah, Diggins, Weeks, Cross, and Kante/Wildens. I would include DD as one of the core rotation guys along with Cross and Weeks, with Weeks coming off the bench maybe. I think Diggins needs to get a lot more playing time. He's shown the ability to get to the rim which is something this team needs. He has no college experience, so time to start giving it to him.
Brandon Martin played way too much in this one. I will be concerned if this continues in Myrtle.
I still like the roster as long as Weeks, Cross, and Noah can provide the deep ball consistently. Still optimistic about the season, and I think the early predictions of this being a team that gels in Jan/Feb could be right on the money.

It was a tough game to find a good rotation. Everyone except for maybe Cross (who I thought should have played more, but maybe his toe was a concern) had an off shooting night. I think Frank tried everything, going small, going big, but we just struggled. We really tried to go inside most of the night, but give Towson credit, they were active and tenacious on D. Just gotta forget it and move on. I'd be surprised if everyone struggles on the same night again offensively like that. The guys will bounce back
Time to Win
Re: Game 2, 2022-23: Towson (11/10)
Based on the exhibition and first two games, I would have a core of Fernandez, Kante and Cross (who it looked like struggled physically in the second half last night) play the most minutes and alternate everyone else around them. Everyone else can contribute in some way but the success of the team will largely be determined by these three IMO.

I mentioned this same observation from Game #1 and got a little pushed aside.Worcester_To_Amherst wrote: ↑Fri Nov 11, 2022 9:05 am I watched the game on replay. Re: Game 2, 2022-23: Towson (11/10)
^ I decided not to comment on his playing time after the first game, assuming that he was in there for veteran leadership in game 1 and to set a tone, and that his role would be reduced going forward. With a much better opponent and Matt Cross available, I was stunned to see him get 20 minutes. He's experienced, has a solid build, and seems like a smart player that knows where to be and what to do, but the problem is that he doesn't provide much of anything offensively, and last night we needed someone to get hot. Even though Weeks was cold in the 1st half, he can get hot at any time and really could have helped, but instead he sat. On a team this deep with a lot of experienced players, Martin should get around 10 minutes or less.
