KAEO: Noah Fernandes

Post by MikeUMA » Mon Feb 28, 2022 5:36 pm

Was surprised to see today that we don't have a dedicated thread for Noah. He was mentioned a lot in the 2019 and 2020 Recruiting threads, when we missed on then landed him, but it's more than appropriate to carve out a unique spot for him.

Noah's been great for us, and I don't mean to sound negative about him when I bring this up, but the numbers are standing out. He's been struggling of late.

Noah was held to 1-8 shooting by SLU on Jan 23, and in that game he slammed into Trent and sustained a concussion. He missed the next two. He returned for Rhody on 2/5 and has played 34.3 mpg since, but his shooting has struggled.

Before that 1/23 SLU game: he was shooting .481 from the field in 15 games, only had 2 games where he shot below 40%, and those were .364 and .333.

With and since 1/23: .247 from the field, almost half of what he was doing. In those 8 games, he's had 3 when he went .125 or less.

Is he gassed? He's playing 33.3 mpg on the season, most on the team, and 34.3 recently. He only played 13 games in the short season last year, and played one-third the minutes at Wichita.

Is he still plagued with concussion after-effects? He doesn't look "off" when watching him play, but the numbers are the numbers.

Both?

What do y'all think?

Probably a combination of all that Mike. He's had a lot of pressure to be the leader as well, and I'm sure the losing wears on these guys a bit too. Noah is a tough kid, no doubt he'll bounce back

While the team has struggled, I think Noah has tried to put the team on his back at times and that can put a lot of pressure on a guy.

Thanks for posting this. I was planning on doing the same comparison since the difference post-concussion has been so stark. He is missing shots, including layups, that he used to make with ease and, although I haven't done the research, his turnovers seem to have increased as well. The effort is still clearly there so whether he is still off somewhat physically, is understandably gun shy of exposing himself to too much contact, or is just worn down who knows. We are not going to beat many teams with him at less than his best so hopefully things will turn around for him soon.

Noah's line last night
5-10 FG
1-3 3FG
2-2 FT
13 pts
2 Reb
4 Ast
3 TOs
26 min, limited with 2 early fouls

Not bad, and the 50% from the floor is nice to see again.

They've been up and down.

Prior to the 1/23 SLU game, he was averaging 2.4 per game.

With 1/23 and since, it's 2.56. I think maybe what caught your eye was he had three games with 5 turnovers in that stretch, versus in the first 15 he only had one game with 5. But even in there, he also had five games where he only had 1.

Noah is the best player on this team, and he plays the most important position. He was no doubt affected by the concussion. Whatever his issues the past few games have been, it doesn't really matter to me at this point as the season is a loss. What matters to me at this point is that he comes back next year. Going into your season with a new coach isn't ideal, but I really think he's a special player and want him to finish his career out as a Minuteman.

Noah just passed Ricky Harris for 32nd place on the career assist list.

We're lucky we have this kid. Very steady, plays smart, always in control, even keeled, excellent leader. He's a good one

We've been fortunate at the PG position for a while now - Chaz, Pimpkins, and now Fernandez... all with the ability to take over a game and all under 6 feet if I'm not mistaken. Next PG will have some big shoes to fill... although Thompson is showing promise for sure.

I think that we may have gotten spoiled as fans through the years.

He is listed as a senior but does he still have one more year left of eligibility due to the Covid19 waiver?
