Matt Zunic! He took a UMass team to The Dance, he took crap from no one, and the students were lined up outside the Cage. RIP.

Matt Zunic May he RIP! A coaches coach a man who took crap from no one. He did take UMass to the NCAA and was a driven coach. He coached at a time when the PE Dept ruled over UMass athletics and Boyden building was their domain. A very closed group of self serving individuals. Matt did hang on and taught PE classes for years eventually retiring to Florida. He was always around Boyden giving an encouraging word and he and Wally Novak always made you laugh. We have taken Matt Zunic for granted as well as Johnny Orr. Johnny was the coach before Jack Leaman. He was a character and left UMass for Michigan and then Iowa State. Two stops where he became a living legend. To think UMass had these icons and they both probably made less then $25,000.
It’s important we know our basketball history and how these coaches gave their blood sweat and tears for good old UMass.

I'll start out by saying that Carvel & Verdi should be put on the search committee.

I don't know much about potential candidates, but based on their HC resumes and bios, 4 names that seem realistic & intriguing are Bashir Mason, Martin Ingelsby, Mitch Henderson, and Matt Langel.

I'm in no position to recommend (or disparage) anyone without a HC resume, simply due to a lack of information.

Calipari, Rick Pitino, Archie Miller, and Dennis Gates, are not realistic options.

If none of those 4 are realistic options then we are in deep trouble as a program. The last 2 names on that list certainly should be viable candidates.

^ Do you have any idea how much money it would take to a) lure them away from where they are, and b) buyout their existing contract to allow them to leave, and 3) to outbid other teams who are also interested in them?

Had to look up Gates cause I'm not too familiar with him. His buyout is $600,000 right now but if the school president or AD leave then it drops to $100,000 (source). So clearly we should replace Bamford with their AD and then grab their coach as well.

Miller though is out of basketball and it would make sense for him to come back home to the A10 like Travis Ford did. He may not be an attractive candidate for a P5 opening based on his record at Indiana (who is still paying him for a few more years, so salary may not be as big of an issue there).

Seems like we are swinging for the fences (which we should)!

I am sure someone will bring the usual suspects with of John Becker, Coen, Al Skinner.

What about Keith Smart? NBA guy, spending this year in the college game, could have some cred.

I find it hard to believe that there wouldn't be good candidates interested in the position.

Quality school, quality league, top notch facilities and a fan base just waiting to support a quality program.

iirc Archie is getting paid millions by IU to not coach, hard to see him coming to UMass essentially for free just to try and build up his resume.

Gates' buyout isn't huge, but I expect the bigger hurdle there is that he'll be a hot commodity and could get a decent P6 gig this off-season if he's ready to leave his current spot.
