Swamy is probably the best Chancellor/President UMASS has ever had. Lombardi may have been great as well but got into a little tussle with Wilson. UMASS has never been in better shape.
McCall's 22-23 Buyout

Re: McCall's 22-23 Buyout
Bringing this back to the top.
We have a real chance to start A10 play 0-6.
Next game is at Davidson (12-2).
Home Saturday to URI (9-4).
Home and home with SLU (9-4).
I'm going to make a bold prediction. If we start 0-6, the uproar that will be directed at Bamford will be so loud he might be forced to fire McCall mid season. We'll find the money somewhere.

Re: McCall's 22-23 Buyout
If the administration and Bamford are serious about finding a new conference for the whole of UMass athletics then MM needs to go. He has no business coaching in the A10 or any future conference they aspire to. This team may not be capable of winning the A10 but they could be better than what we are seeing game in and game out and that is on the HC.
Time for UMass to make a legitimate effort for someone like an Archie Miller to show they are as serious about MBB.

Re: McCall's 22-23 Buyout
This was my concern heading in to yesterday's game as well. That was a must win for confidence and to avoid a lengthy losing streak. We will get smoked by Davidson. I say this all the time, but McCall's teams just don't compete well with teams that run structured half court offenses like Richmond and Davidson. I don't, however, think the two following games are definitely losses, since they're at home. But if we do lose them, it will get seriously ugly out there.69MG wrote: ↑Sat Jan 08, 2022 8:58 pm Bringing this back to the top.

Re: McCall's 22-23 Buyout
Outside of scandals or health reasons isn't it rare for a college to fire a head coach mid-season?

Re: McCall's 22-23 Buyout
Probably, but if we start 0-6 we are most likely looking at a 6-12 A10 record. Yes, the transfer portal can be used but we have no commits for 2022. With a lame duck coach and a less than mediocre program, what good players will come here next year? We lose Rich, Steadman, Buttrick and maybe more. We could be abysmal next year if we can't replace them.
That is not encouraging for next year so why not cut the cord now (or in 4 games) and start looking for a coach with some cache, if we can find one who will take the job.
Re: McCall's 22-23 Buyout
We could pay more for a coach and still have him not be the highest paid in the state by benchmarking the HC salary to be Collins minus one dollar...
2021 University of Massachusetts System Collins Michael Chancellor & Svp Hlth Sciences $1,248,043.87
$1.25 million could get us a better coach but the problem is, can we get a better coach than McCall?
Just as a point of reference, not a suggestion that he is the answer: Slick Rick makes $1.1 million.
Rick Pitino. Basketball coach - Iona College - United States; Born: 1952 USA. Annual: $1,100,000.00; Monthly: $91,666.67; Weekly: $21,153.85 ...

^ Don't forget that MM wasn't the first choice (maybe not in the top 10). He was an emergency hire when Kelsey backed out. It was getting late and maybe we jumped the gun instead of doing a more thorough search. MM got the job because Billy Donovan put in a good word for him.
Re: McCall's 22-23 Buyout
Econalum you are right on about both Lombardi and Swammy. Not only outstanding improvements academically the schools endowment fund has gone from 143 million in 2003 to 922 million in 2020.
Re: McCall's 22-23 Buyout
Pitino would be an instant smash. Maybe he’s old enough where it makes sense to make good. That said, Iona is probably a better program at the moment so it would need to be a good pitch. Confident in our AD?

Where are you getting the endowment money from? Thought it was closer to the 350m mark.

69, he has been here for five years, he got the job, they do not ask you why you got the job, they ask how you have done in the job, and MM has done a horrible job.69MG wrote: ↑Sun Jan 09, 2022 8:47 pm ^ Don't forget that MM wasn't the first choice (maybe not in the top 10).
