^I think that was the turning point in the game. We looked to be really finding a groove and instead that put the game on pause and fired up Northeastern.
Why didn't Garcia get in the game at all? Our guards were in foul trouble all night and he never got off the bench. That concerns me.
*Scratch that. I'm seeing now in the JG thread that maybe he's having some academic difficulties. I hope he can get it together because he can be an important piece.

Re: Game 10, 2021-22: at Northeastern (12/7)
Giving up two 11 point leads.... isn't great. I'm not really sure what happened in the 1st half so I put that one on this being basketball and a game of runs.
The 2nd half is another story... they let a no big deal situation get in their heads while NU used it to motivate them. Guys running off the bench is unacceptable, especially these days when you know the repercussions or at least you should know them.
We had a few key bad calls against us in the 2nd half, but they did too in the 1st half, so while the timing hurt us more (I think), the officiating was a wash.
Overall, shots didn't fall when they needed them to.... that's the type of team we have and the name of the game. But we really needed to have this game.... it's a shame on numerous levels.

Not a game UMass should have lost. I didn't watch too closely for most of the 2nd half, but from what I saw they did not get enough from Steadman or TJ/CJ. Steadman missed a couple shots he needs to make in the 1st half and the altercation with Doherty seemed to be the turning point. TJ deferred to Noah and Rich Kelly a lot in the first half, which is fine, but they need to get something from him or CJ and neither produced. Maddening how TJ can look like an all-league type player one game and then disappear the next. I did see him battling on the boards, but I guess I envisioned TJ being a star at UMass after his short (first) freshman year. Looks like he's more of a role player.
The team doesn't have the physical toughness necessary to consistently win. With the struggles on D and rebounding they can't afford to waste possessions on offense, and they had a lot of sloppy turnovers and missed shots in the paint. UMass is shaping up to be a middle of the road A-10 team that can get hot from 3 and beat anyone, but will also lose games on the boards.
Rich and especially Noah are offensive talents but having them both on the court really hurts the D. I think we all envisioned Cairo/JG/Dibaji/Preston leading the defense this year, and that's not going to happen. If they can win out the remaining non-con I think that will be considered a pretty good start to the season, but North Texas is going to be a tough game to win.

I wasn't able to catch the game last night. Did UMass ever switch to zone defense?

For the first time in his UMass career I thought Noah played too much hero ball. Especially early on, he dominated the ball and looked to create his own shot at the exclusion of getting his teammates involved. As a result, nobody else ever really got into a good offensive rhythm, with the possible exception of Rich Kelly. I'm a huge Noah fan but hope he doesn't start slipping towards a me first offensive mentality.

I don't understand it! Last Sat. Weeks showed a lot of energy and had a great game against Harvard. Last night, absolutely nothing. Was he sick, hurt or was something else bothering him ?

Sucks that the Steadman/Doherty confrontation fired Northeastern up but not UMass.
I hate that UMass is a team that relies on the 3.

watching the game on NESN now, they do not show the three guys who were ejected. Who were the 3 games? Why were there no foul shots shot for the three guys getting ejected? Wally and Earl Watson are experiences officials, surprised they butchered it this badly.

I saw Dibaji, and who I thought was Preston, leave the court. Not sure on the 3rd. They walked behind the NU bench when it was focused on the refs or CD (can't remember exactly). I believe they called a Bench T, but I didn't pay enough attention to what happened with the free throws.

There were no foul shots. not sure why the guys were ejected, unless mccall told em to wait on the bus.InnervisionsUMASS wrote: ↑Wed Dec 08, 2021 2:30 pmPreecherJenkins wrote: ↑Wed Dec 08, 2021 2:23 pm watching the game on NESN now, they do not show the three guys who were ejected. On the radio call, they said it was the 3 guys that were not dressed: Dibaji, Cairo, and Preston. They were ejected for leaving the bench and coming on to the court.

Box Score shows there was a Team technical on UMass in addition to the Steadman and Doherty technicals, but no idea beyond that.

None of the recaps online seem to even mention the scuffle, which is odd.

I guess they don't call technical fouls for hanging on the rim. There were 2 that deserved technical fouls in my opinion.
