I think it’s now a thing that the media talks about, or Twitter talks about or fans or whatever it may be,” UMass coach Matt McCall said of the team's struggles away from the Mullins Center. “We just need to play better. I don’t want to say it’s a thing, we just have to play better. We can’t create this thing where it’s like, ‘oh we can’t win on the road.’ We can win on the road, we’ve just got to do it and we’ve got to play better. We’re going to get nine more opportunities come December 30 to show it.

McCall knows about the road struggles, and he's hearing the chatter from the fans, whether on here, Twitter, or elsewhere. https://www.gazettenet.com/UMass-basket ... p-43978929

IT IS NOW A THINg? MCCALL is either stupid or oblivious that it is all a sudden a thing.
1-5 21-22
4-4**** COVID NO FANS 2020-21
3-12 19-20
2-14 18-19
2-15 17-18
MWM record on the road or neutral sites when fans are allowed in the buildings they are playing against. 8-46, 12-50 if you include the Covid year. 12 and 50. 12 wins in 62 chances. UNDER 20% 8 wins when fans are allowed in the building 15%.... I worked for a rebuilding NBA team, the GM told me once that we will know when the rebuild is over when we start winning on the road. Good teams should win 40% on the road, great teams in 50-55%.
This board and has been talking about the lack of road wins since at least 2018 season. The media needs to get tougher with him. This is a thing that is probably going to cost you your job come early March.
I would have fired this joke after year two cause you can tell he was not evolving into the job. They have tried to put veteran coaches on his bench, tried to have sleezy recruiters, his BFF Peter Lash.

Pretty weird that his teams are doing as well as they are at home, because it's not like the fans are turning up in droves.

^ That's why I can't figure out why the home/road splits are so bad. Mullins Center crowds are very small, I think probably the lowest they've been since the place opened, and we play plenty of road games in New England with good UMass alumni turnout. It's not a fan support thing, it's a coach thing. Has to be.

Location shouldn't affect how you play defense and as we all know, that's been the major issue the last couple of years.
Re: Game 11, 2021-22: North Texas (12/11)
This might belong in the "season" thread, but that would risk sounding like a defense of Coach McCall and I'm not about to try that.
This season seems to have brought greater home court advantage than I remember. UMass is an extreme example of road woes, but many teams aren't much different. Here's home vs "not home" records for our opponents so far:
UMBC 3-0, 2-4
Yale 4-1, 2-5
Penn St 4-2, 1-3 (only win was neutral court)
Weber St 4-0, 5-1 (3 at Jersey Mike’s)
UNCG 5-0, 1-3
Ball St. 3-0, 1-5 (1 win was vs UMass)
Rutgers 5-1, 0-4
Harvard 5-1, 1-3
Northeastern 4-1, 0-4
N.Texas 3-1, 2-2 (all 4 games on “neutral courts”: example: UMass travelled 1700 miles vs N. Texas travelling 40 miles)
How about some A-10 teams:
Davidson 3-0, 4-2
URI 5-0, 2-3
Richmond 4-0, 2-4
St. Joe 5-2, 1-3
Fordham 4-1, 1-4
Lasalle 5-1, 0-3
GMU 4-1, 1-4
We'd probably feel differently with even 1 win away from home. I think we could have beaten Ball St if not for Noah's injury and maybe Northeastern if not for losing Dibaji and Javohn shortly before that game. No excuses, but as I posted previously the full roster hasn't ever been available. Rich Kelly is now the one and only guy who's played >20 minutes in every game.
An exception to the extreme home court advantages this season: Fairfield is 3-1 at home and 4-2 on the road, having won their last 4 true road games in a row.

So you're saying they won't be afraid when they come here on Sunday.

Apathy is the one reason McCall is still around. Even in this board, where there are people who care, the expectations have gotten so low that an NIT bid would be like going to the Final Four.
Of course when apathy translates to crowds of 1500 and low basketball fundraising, that is where it becomes problematic for McCall.

They also have good size we could get killed on the boards
Re: Game 11, 2021-22: North Texas (12/11)
Some interesting quotes from an article on the North Texas win and how to beat us.
.The Mean Green’s presence in the paint was paramount, as they scored 32 points inside at a 57.1 percentage. Their aggressiveness inside the lane landed them at the charity stripe 11 times, where they hit all but one free throw.
“Their biggest dude was probably 6 foot 10 inches, and they could not guard us down there,” Ousmane said. “We were able to go and take advantage
Sophomore Rubin Jones was named MVP of the game, knocking down three three-pointers and scoring 13 points. He also tallied three rebounds and played a team-high 35 minutes. Jones credited the win to controlling the game’s tempo and not letting UMass play their fast-paced game.
“They play the fastest in the country, but we wanted to keep it at our pace,” Jones said. “If you keep the game at half-court, we are going to win.”

Their two road losses were against Providence and BC. The other four road games were against weak opponents.

It's probably a game we should have won, but his loss won't look bad by the end of the year.

Interesting upset. North Texas downs Wichita State by 10. North Texas has some good wins in the non-conference slate over Drake, UMass and Wichita State.

It's amazing that we are still considered a good, non-conference, win

North Texas lost to La Tech - scoring 13 in the first half and 36 for the game! Still had a very good season (24-6) and will play somewhere next week.
