George Miller

Post by MikeUMA » Thu Nov 11, 2021 9:55 am

Folks, sorry to be writing this, but wanted to offer some thoughts for our friend George Miller as he's going through a terrible time right now.

As many long-timers around here know, George was the voice of the Minutemen in the early 90s, the lead radio guy for WHMP as they broadcast UMass games. He also later served as public address announcer in the Mullins Center for a few years. And he's an occasional visitor here on the board.

George's wife Gayle was killed last night, in a pedestrian/vehicle accident on State Street in Springfield. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and spoke with police. The police Traffic Unit is investigating.

George and Gayle had known each other going back decades, but had been reacquainted a few years back, and got married last year. They made the best of the circumstances at the time with a very unique wedding:

George, you're a good man and we're thinking about you. So sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear this. George is a good dude from when I got to know him a little bit during my years there. Hang in there, George…

It's not a secret that George's handle here is "DirSport" which dates back to his long ago sports director days at WHMP.

A prized possession of mine is an audio tape of George calling our amazing comeback from 17 down at West Virginia with very few minutes to go.
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

Incredibly sad news, so sorry to hear this.

George recently spent a good amount of time recovering his old game tapes and putting them on SoundCloud. If you need something to listen to as you drive down to Yale tomorrow or to the next home game, here is the link: https://soundcloud.com/user-125347718

This is awful news.

Back before social media, before Mike's board existed, before the internet boom, the only source of real time UMass hoop info was the AOL message board. I remember George(ie DirSport) actively engaged with other fans on that board during the glory years - the best years of my UMass sports fandom.

Thinking of him during this difficult time.
