NIL

Post by MikeUMA » Thu Jul 01, 2021 1:24 pm

NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) kicks off today, with several state laws going into effect, and the NCAA implementing a policy to allow it (grudgingly) nationwide.

No time wasted in UMass land. Five College Movers, who aren't shy about publicity (not saying that negatively), has apparently teamed up with Noah Fernandes.

Great start. I hope this gives recruits confidence that UMass is a viable option in the new NIL world. Also, congrats to Noah.

Maybe they could sign up Steadman - a man who can box out.

FCM also signed up Sam.

^ Not Sam the mascot, the other Sam, who is the best player on campus. :)

Seems like two very good choices. It will be interesting nationally to see who gets the money. You know people will be tracking by sport, race, gender, etc.

How about a Tenn St. player inking a $2Million deal- this will spiral out of control.

So how does this work? Anybody can just give any player any amount of money they want and they just promote their business? What about just wealthy people, they can just pay them and basically endorse them?

And can the athletes make deals before they sign or agree to sign with a team? This could make old fashioned "boosters" look like child's play.

So if I am a prized recruit with a long list of suitors, my first question is not about playing time. It is- so what endorsement deals can you get me and for how much? Will the Nike/Adidas schools etc. now have to give endorsement deals?

This helps understand the process, but there are still a lot of items to be worked out.

I'm all for people at the bottom having access to opportunities to better themselves financially. However, I also know that money corrupts and this could be a pandora's box for college sports. I guess we'll find out.
