There goes that last scholarship. Greg Jones. Forward with some size from the Bronx who played at Southern Connecticut I believe just posted that he is UMass bound. That’s about all I know.

Interesting. The staff were certainly prioritizing maturity in the frontcourt. We now have a few guys with size and games under their belts. One of our weaknesses has been rebounding and interior D. Hopefully Jones, Buttrick, and Steadman will provide a steadying and solid, if unspectacular, presence in the paint. They all at least look like they'll be able to mix it up.

Gotta imagine we're going to look to shoot teams out of the gym. I'm really curious about how fast we'll play. Probably won't be breakneck UMass under Ford speed, but the team's looked a lot better under McCall when playing with pace and purpose, not the casual side to side, stagnant stuff they can fall into. Bench rotations are going to be critical.

D2 player. Looks like he originally started his career at James Madison before transferring to Southern Connecticut. I believe that he did not play in the 2020-21 season.

Career Highs in his 1 season at Southern Connecticut.

Points: 31 (Jan. 25, 2020 vs Stonehill)
Assists: 5 (Feb. 11, 2020 at Pace)
Rebounds: 15 (Jan. 22, 2020 at Franklin Pierce)

Other schools that have reached out to Greg Jones: Samford, UMBC, UNC Asheville, Sam Houston, Loyola Marymount, St. Bonaventure.

My favorite part about Greg Jones thus far: We got him and Mark Schmidt was also in on him. Schmidt always has a good eye for talent.

I don't think so. Our Greg Jones is from the Bronx, played sparingly for 2 years at JMU and then 1 year at Southern CT. He is 6'7, 220 and averaged 13.8 and 7.6 against the likes of AIC, Adelphi, St. Michael's, Southern New Hampshire, Bentley, etc. in the NE10 conference (DII). SCSU didn't play last year so he might have 2 year left.

Maybe he'll be great and I wish him the best but I was hoping for a lot more with our last scholarship.

Found a video of him at SCSU. He wears #1.

From his SCSU bio. It seems surprising that he didn't do better at JMU. We need rebounding and interior defense so I'm hoping Greg is a late bloomer.

^ Here's a full game, I watched the majority of it.

My first impressions of Jones are that he's an active body who can probably give UMass a few minutes at the 4 or 5 depending on matchups. I don't think he'll be a revelation, and I hope UMass won't need him to do much more than grab a few rebounds and body up guys on defense in the post.

I watched the first half and didn’t see anything that would warrant him getting the last scholarship. Maybe he played better in the second half but from what I saw they might as well given the scholarship to a high school player or just held it for next year.

Well I think he only has 1 year left so its like holding on to it but with an extra body to help in practice and incase of injury to a thin frontcourt.

Frankly, even his highlight reel wasn't very high.

I assume an extra body. You need a few guys on the bench that aren’t really competing for minutes. Usually that’s a freshman, but trying to find time for 12 or 13 guys almost never works.

Agree with Insider. Guys with a year left are really competing for minutes and that may help raise the bar for competition in practice. The added depth of a guy with some college experience can't hurt. Unless you can get an impact freshman big guy, not the worst option. Plus he seems like a smart, hardworking kid which can only help the culture.

I think Dibaji is going to have a big leap this year. Last season looked like he started to "get it" and found a way to contribute and really worked at his D.
And Cairo and Preston are two of my favorites when it comes to toughness and playing scrappy to do the necessary little things.

Could be a nice TEAM they're developing if everyone buys in.

^ I'm expecting a bit of a player by committee approach to the front-court unless a couple of guys really separate themselves from the pack, and I have no concerns about that. The relative success or failure of the team will probably largely hinge on how much improvement Fernandes, Garcia, Weeks, Santos, and McCrory can make from their last season.
