2021-2022 Schedule

Post by 69MG » Wed Apr 21, 2021 4:49 pm

I'll start a new thread just for the schedule. Rothstein posted today that we have home games against Penn State (we go there in 2022) and Rutgers (we went there last year). Maybe Buttrick has a breakout game against this old team.

That's an impressive start to the OOC schedule.

I don't think we should schedule too many tough OOC games.

We lost to freaking Bryant last year. Bring on the Big Ten teams. I think both of these are winnable games early in the year. Hopefully playing "name" schools will get asses in the seats.

Exactly, we lost to them with Tre. What are Big 10 schools going to do. We got 2 good opponents and probably a couple more tournament games. If we over schedule we are sunk.

PS, Bryant was pretty good last year.

Glad to see UMASS play these schools- especially Rutgers. I wish they played every year (in football as well). I think potential recruits see these teams on the schedule and will want to go to UMASS. Much better than playing (and losing) to Bryant.

I'm not saying we play every game against low-majors. We always get in a desirable tournament and have two more solid opponents. Last year we had a lot of talent with less confidence than I would like to see in A10 play. We should have beat Bryant like we should have beat Howard a few years ago. We need a mix and we can only handle so many bad losses.

I'm okay playing Northeastern, BU, hopefully BC and some other regionals like Siena, Army, Vermont, Lowell. I'd like to see an exhibition or regular season game against AIC.

I'd also welcome schools from outside the region, and they usually come in the form of tournament home games in Amherst. They are not usually teams we want to see, like NC A&T. I'm okay with that.

Rutgers and Penn State are two classic matchups! I love it.

But ask John Calipari what happens when you over-schedule.

I think a reasonable goal is 10 wins in OOC.

If you want to be a NCAA Tournament team, or even a NIT team, you need a couple big boys on the non-conference schedule. Would love to get UConn or another Big East or ACC school on the slate.

Wait, are my eyes correct? We are considering Rutgers and Penn State overscheduling matchups? Guys, just because they are from the mighty Big 10, doesn't mean that we scheduled Wisconsin and Michigan State. Rutgers usually stinks, this past year aside. But who knows what their roster will look like next year. Same with Penn State. They have a new coach and lost a ton of guys to the portal. This is a good thing. These kind of teams are the teams we should be scheduling. Just like when we had Georgia come to Amherst a few years ago and we whooped their asses. A few power 5's sprinkled in with the Northeastern's, Harvard's, Umass-Lowell's are just fine with me. Maybe we re-schedule UCF. Even though that was a stop on the way back from Jamaica. Maybe we get Sacred Heart and/or Fairfield back on the schedule. Or Yale. Either way this is the kind of schedule Umass should be aiming for.

Agree completely. If your goal is to make the NCAA tournament, you need to have a strong OOC schedule. I think that should be the 'goal' every year. Penn State and Rutgers should be tier 1 or tier 2 teams which is good.

So we got 2 majors already, probably 2 more in a tournament, and try for BC, UConn or Providence. But more than 5 high major games is a lot to ask from a team that just lost 2 best players.

Uconn and BC aint happening. Maybe we get Providence back on the schedule regularly. That'd be nice. But again, they aren't Villanova. If we want to grab teams from the middle/back of the pack in the power 5. Great. They still have a name brand attached to them, but they won't be overwhelming matchups. I'd also like to see them back in a 4 team tournament again. Whether it's a Southern Illinois/Nevada, a Florida State/Notre Dame or a Virginia/St. John's, the exposure and experience gained by playing those type of teams is great for the school and the players.

I don't think Mark was our second best player

Though not this year, I'd say we're closer to getting BC and even UConn back on the schedule than people think.
