How about a Southern New England Cup that cuts BC out of the whole damn thing. UMass, Holy Cross, Providence, and UConn make a nice little region. Heck, make it an 8-team tournament with Bryant, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, and Northeastern. That gives you 2 Rhode Island teams, 3 Connecticut teams, and 3 Massachusetts teams. A few appetizers (mid majors) a few entrees (high majors), and a few cupcakes (low majors) for dessert. Everybody eats.

Love to see like a New England Holiday classic.
UMass, BC, UConn, Northeastern, Holy Cross, Lowell, Vermont, and Providence. Have it on 2 consecutive weekends in late December, 2 games each weekend. Good local teams, people could come out at the holidays. Kind of like chuff suggested just a little bigger, and home for the holidays

I mean I like the lineup here, but I feel like a New England Classic/Tournament should feature URI and Harvard. Simply adding them would make it 10 teams though, which wouldn't work as easily.

Also I was going to say BU but then realized that thinking it made me laugh. Yale might be fun though.

As for BC or UConn, a change in coach might lead BC to fresh thinking, but I think Hurley might stab himself in the eye before he puts UM on the schedule.
I like the idea of an expanded Commonwealth Cup. Maybe a kind of Beanpot, with UMass, BC, Harvard and Northeastern. It would be good for NCAA hoops in the state. Has there been something like that in the last 25 years?
And if BC gets scared, do it with Lowell and declare BC as last place for being too eagle $h!t to compete.

It's sad that we don't already do this every year.

Does any region in the country do this?

Philly has their big 5 games. Not so much a tournament, but definitely an great local tradition for those schools.

The only one I can think of is the Crossroads Classic in Indiana. Notre Dame and Butler rotate playing Indiana and Purdue.

It would be cool to see a New England Classic. It could be based on conferences: Atlantic 10, Big East, America East, Patriot. Maybe the Ivy League too. Each of those conferences has two or more NE teams so the tournament could cycle through different teams each season.

A bracketed tournament like this would be tough because I think teams are only allowed one early season tournament per year so this would eliminate any of the teams who play from playing in any other tournament. And with most of the other tournaments weekend long destinations, BC, URI, and UMass at the very least would likely not be all that interested in a NE college only tournament every year. A set-up like the Philly Big 5 games would work though because those would just be non-conferences games.

Exactly, we should be looking to emulate the Big 5 thing, not a legitimate tournament.

^^The problem with that is BC only wants to play UMASS when they are good or UMASS sucks. No incentive for BC to play UMASS unless their absence in a tourney would be embarrassing. The Best of New England BBall tourney would be a good name.

How about "The Best of New England BBall This Is Not a Tournament Tournament."

You certainly have to have willing participants, tournament or Big 5 style. There's something we lack at the moment.

We had it for a few years sort of. The Coach's vs Cancer event at the Garden. A format like that would work, eight teams, four games on Saturday, four on Sunday. Matchups predetermined both days and rotate each year so it wouldn't be a tournament. It wouldn't crown a Best of NE champ but it gets the teams playing each other.

Hard to see UMass, BC, URI opting to play in an all NE tourney when the other options for tournaments are in places like Vegas, Hawaii, Mohegan Sun, Charleston, Jamaica, Florida etc... against opponents from P5 conferences with games on national TV.

It would be an either or thing, you can do two tournaments.
