2021-2022 Schedule
Re: 2021-2022 Schedule
I think with a new coach at BC we may get them back.
Re: 2021-2022 Schedule
I think playing Providence every year benefits both programs.
Re: 2021-2022 Schedule
If we can nail two of the three that is huge. But if we have 6 power conference opponents we need to schedule: Lowell, Maine, UNH, Hartford, CCSU and stay away from locals that could sting us like Vermont. We don't need a huge travel budget OOC, but we need to fill all scholarships and carry walk-ons. Last year with an open scholarship was stupid.

Here's what we're tracking:
https://umasshoops.com/wiki/doku.php?id ... 2#schedule
COVID blew up a lot of stuff, I wonder how many of the prior agreements we had will come to fruition?
- Rutgers did
- Penn State is expected
- Harvard owes us a home game
- Do Akron and Fairfield owe us home games?
- Will UCF and/or Sacred Heart materialize as they were supposed to? UCF is worth saving, Sacred Heart only if you need to fill up the slate.
- Are we gonna open with Lowell again?
Eager to see on all of these.
As for BC or UConn, a change in coach might lead BC to fresh thinking, but I think Hurley might stab himself in the eye before he puts UM on the schedule.

Re: 2021-2022 Schedule
The goal of any schedule, besides winning as many games as possible is to get a good RPI and SOS for NCAA or NIT consideration. When it comes to the out of conference, I agree you need a mix but higher conference opponents are MUCH more valuable. There is little to no benefit to playing too many lower conference teams. If you win, big deal you were were supposed to win. If you lose it hurts real bad. If you beat someone from a higher conference its great. If you lose it does not hurt you as much.

One thing I can guarantee. People will complain no matter who we schedule.

Re: 2021-2022 Schedule
It looks like Penn State only has 8 scholarship players remaining. They have no incoming transfers or freshman recruits. They lost their 2 leading scorers, Jones (15.3) and Brockington (12.6) to the transfer portal.
They seem more beatable than Rutgers although Rutgers lost their 2nd, 4th and 5th leading scorers (30.4 points) and one of them was their leading rebounder (8.5). Rutgers has 9 returning scholarship players, 1 freshman and no incoming transfers.
I'm sure both rosters will undergo more changes before the season (so might ours).

I would expect to see Holy Cross back on the schedule, with DCU games included in the series.

Think so as well. Ryan Bamford has a relationship with their AD and even was able to have the football game changed from Gillette to on campus.
Go UMass!!
Re: 2021-2022 Schedule
I like the idea of an expanded Commonwealth Cup. Maybe a kind of Beanpot, with UMass, BC, Harvard and Northeastern. It would be good for NCAA hoops in the state. Has there been something like that in the last 25 years?

Re: 2021-2022 Schedule
The relationship may have helped, but that was likely much more Pandemic and Gillette related than anything else.
Your overall point stands, though, and as I said earlier, I think seeing BC back on the hoops schedule will come sooner than people think.

Re: 2021-2022 Schedule
In the 70's, BC, HC, Providence and UMASS played in the Colonial Classic in the Garden. It was fun and had great interest. It was when Ronnie Perry played at HC and UMASS was at the end of its run with Pyatt, Eldridge et al. I think BC and Providence were pretty good as well.
