KAEO: Trent Buttrick

Post by natwam2547 » Wed Apr 07, 2021 11:52 am

Steadman got his, so why not start one for Trent as well.

6' 8" 240 pound forward taking advantage of his 5th year of eligibility at Umass. Averaged 3 and 3 while playing almost 14 minutes a game for Penn State. Hit 16 3's last year, including 2 in 12 minutes in the second round of the Big 10 Tournament against Wisconsin. Solid addition. No idea how well he plays defense, but he adds some size and beef, something we are lacking. If he can play 10-12 minutes and hit a couple threes, grab a couple boards and make it hard for guys to score in the paint, fantastic. I like the experienced additions so far.

So that leaves 1 scholarship left?

Believe so. I like that we have a developmental center the. 2 guys who can bang down low. Feel like we haven’t had real depth in the frontcourt in the while it was tre and djery the tre and mark. Nice to have 3 guys who can battle down low with buttrick being more of a four but a big one vs guys like Dominguez degray Diallo who are more hybrids 3/4

Found a highlight video of Trent. Since he only averaged 3 points a game, it may have every point he scored in his career. He actually looks more fluid than I was expecting.

Nice. Can hit 3's and block shots. He certainly has some developed skills. He should contribute nicely.

If he’s our backup 5 it’s an upgrade. Looks athletic with a nice stroke for his size and has solid rebounding numbers. I like it.

From what I’ve seen and read Steadman is probably the better player but I really like this guy, too. Fingers crossed CJ Kelly actually commits because that’s a solid three man haul from the portal.

Built a page for Trent
https://umasshoops.com/wiki/doku.php?id=trent_buttrick

His spot-start at Top 25 Illinois in January stood out in his stats. Start, 6 minutes, 5 fouls. Yeesh. I found a write-up about it.
Penn State interim head coach Jim Ferry made a change to his starting lineup Tuesday when he inserted Trent Buttrick for Seth Lundy, but it did nothing to help his team. Buttrick saw very little time on the court and got in foul trouble early. The decision to bench Lundy to start the game was an interesting one, given the difference in ability between the two players.

Buttrick is a stretch forward who can make open shots from beyond the arc but does not have the mobility to defend at a high level, nor the rim protection ability to help near the basket. Lundy has only been a slightly worse shooter this season from deep, and provides more offensive skill, while giving the team more versatility on defense. The decision didn’t pan out well against the Illini and it’s hard to envision it becoming a trend moving forward.

I don't mean to be negative about him, just posting that observation.

I don't think we should have high expectations in him, really Steadman either.

I think Steadman might be a solid A10 center

I don't see Buttrick as more than a role player, 5-10 minutes at the 4 or 5, whichever is needed. Steadman is much more important. It's Steadman and Mathews at the 5 and I'm not banking on a freshman not named Mitchell to hold his own in the A10.

^ Hard to accurately project either Steadman or Buttrick, for different reasons.

Before you write off Buttrick, keep in mind he was going against B1G competition, and he may have been stuck at Penn State playing a position & role that didn't suit him...

“I had to play the five man this past year and I'm not a five, I’m a four so that wasn't my position,” said Buttrick. “I just had to do what was best for the team. I want to play my natural position and cut some weight because I had to put on 15-20 extra pounds to bang with big men in the Big 10.”

So if Buttrick came here to play the 4 are we going to roll into the season with Steadman and Mathews as our only 5s? That seems dangerous.

Unless, of course, Tre decides to come back

You role with 2 knowing you have buttrick who is versatile and can give you minutes at the 5 as needed

After reading the 247 article about his transfer I’m not sure if Buttrick would have came here if McCall planned on using him at the 5. I think he could against most A10 teams but it seems like he wants to play what he sees as his real position.

Guess we’ll find out at some point
