^ Kinda gotta read between the lines.....MM states that will be doing a lot of pressing.....coincidence????
“Coming into the season, McCall made it pretty clear that UMass would be pressing this season, a promise on which he’s delivered. With Bergeron bringing his litany of press defenses to Amherst — and a few Woodstock products already comfortable with them — the Minutemen pressed from the jump, and the early results were mixed.”
I think that pressing is part of the defensive approach and would fall as the responsibility of the guy in charge of the defense.....

For a number of games last year I remember Tony holding up signs telling the players to press and which press he wanted them to use. The results were mixed (some games good, some horrible) but it appeared that Tony was making the calls. Maybe that's changed this year. So far, no signs.NilesGold wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 4:00 pm
Written over a year ago, and at no point does it describe Bergeron as the person who's calling the shots on defense.
It's possible Bergeron has complete control over the entire defense, but it's also possible that Bergeron is tasked only with teaching the players their press defenses... but not when to use them, or which variety to use, or anything else related to the team's defense.

How many top 25 or for that matter top 50 teams are "pressing teams"?? I mean all teams press, I'm saying teams that aggressively press 75% of the time.. I'm thinking none.. coincidence???

Dk was the runner up to McCall last time. He’s ready for a head job.

Re: Who would you hire as HC for 2021-22
here would be my list:
1. DK (Killings)
2. Tim Miles
3. Gus Argenal
4. Nevada Smith
5. David Patrick
I am sure none of these guys will be on the actual list and we'll continue to struggle.
someone posted the coaching search of 2001. Just think if we would have ended up with Fran the screaming Man or Jimmy "Retirement" Lags. Instead we ended up with a retread guy who never coached again.

You're missing what I'm getting at... this is just talk from over a year ago, we don't know how much Bergeron was/is actually running the defense or the press. Maybe he's running every aspect of the defense, or maybe not.TruBluMaroon wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 4:08 pm ^ Kinda gotta read between the lines.....MM states that will be doing a lot of pressing.....coincidence????

WVU is the only one I can think of. I've been recently converted into the group who believes a press should only be used sparingly.TheInsider wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 5:01 pm How many top 25 or for that matter top 50 teams are "pressing teams"?? Yeah, i like the press here and there to mix teams up, but all the time seems to be trouble for us at times.

Not ready to fire MM. but you guys are on the right page. Stay away from assistants or recruiters at bigger programs. Go after successful head coaches from lower programs. The success shows that they can manage games and know how to adjust. The mason coach was good example won a national champ at williams. If you can coach you can coach. The question of course becomes Can they recruit. But I’d rather have a proven game coach than a recruiter who is clueless. Weve had enough of that. And NO MM was not an example because he had just two years at Chat as head coach. Thats not enough to be considered a proven winner.

George mason is a program to emulate. I believe the coach is on the hot seat down there.Jeff90 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 7:07 pm Not ready to fire MM. but you guys are on the right page. The most successful coaches over the past 30 years at Umass were assistants who became head coaches!
