Who would you hire as HC for 2021-22

Post by NilesGold » Fri Jan 01, 2021 11:29 am

Here's a hypothetical to discuss - If UMass relieves McCall, who would you want as our HC in 2021-22, and why?

Let's assume that if you elevate Bergeron, Tre Mitchell stays, but if you go with someone else Tre Mitchell leaves.

Jared Grasso.

The guy has recruited really good talent to a NEC school and I’ve watched him give both of my college teams hell this season. I think his style of play can work in the A10 and I love how much energy his team plays with. Being a Tim Cluess disciple is a huge plus, too.

Al Skinner. It might be a long shot that he would ever come back or is even interested in coaching still, but he would generate a ton of interest in the program and could be really good if he close to as successful as he was at BC.

More realistically, I would just run it back with Bergeron, or hire either Jared Grasso or John Becker from UVM

If we can get Bergeron to agree to a favorable contract (super-low buyout for UMass) I think my first choice would be to give him a year to see what he can do.

Shaheen Holloway is probably my first choice. I haven't done much homework on him yet, but he's doing awesome at St. Peter's. Biggest drawback is that I suspect he'd bolt for an equivalent or bigger gig in the NYC area in a heartbeat.

Grasso is interesting, but I'm not convinced building a team to play as fast as possible is going to work in the A10, and on a personal level I'm not a fan of the style.

Becker has certainly had a lot of success, but he's never really had to build/re-build a program.

Wes Miller is great, but I doubt UMass could get him.

Ryan Odom, Bob Richey, Richie Riley, Jeremy Ballard - all seem good, but zero experience or connections in the northeast makes me a little nervous.

I know Tony has been very successful at the camp/high school level but my only question would be why did it take till now for him to get a college assistant job?? I'm sure behind the scenes at the college level the reason is known.

I have no idea if Tony can/will be a great A10 head coach. What I do know is that the kids at Woodstock loved him and would run through the proverbial wall for him. If a change is made (and I find it highly unlikely due the $$ involved) you have to give him 2 years before making any judgements.

^ Interesting that the same kids who would work hard at the Prep level , can’t even play basic defense at the College level....unless it was easier to excel at the Prep level than it is at the College level....before TB coached at the College level, the only thing to judge him by was the Prep level.....not anymore......
