He's been here for four years, if these connections have been so great, why have we gotten only one Mass high school player who came via an open tryout?

This is a cost savings of $100k for the budget, we should call it what it is.

I assume he's referring to the financial difficulties brought on by the pandemic. Athletic department staff was let go or furloughed, coaches took paycuts, etc. If elevating Grossman is cheaper than hiring an assistant from outside the program, then that makes sense. I don't know how it works out to $100k in savings though, seems a bit much to me.

I think promoting Grossman is fine. I don't know much about him, but he seems to have paid his dues and is working his way up. I'm good with that. I had heard some people bring up Ricky Harris' name as an assistant, which I think would have been an interesting hire, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Correct he was not on the road, but if you have the relationships and can get players they would have gotten players. If there are not players to get that is understandable too

Eldon would love to explain.

In 2020, Tony B and Basketball ops guy made 280k
in 2021, Assuming Grossman makes the lowest assistant money and the DOBO makes Grossman's old salary it would cost $180k
All numbers through Mass state employee database
The Delta between the two is 100k of savings.

Let me take this one step further. If you hire someone from outside the program, you may have to pay to buy them out of their contract. You have to pay $10k or so for moving expenses, pay other costs. Quickly your savings with Tony leaving will be gone.

Have we not gotten players from New England. Having relationships with coaches is also only one part of it. But he has them

Ok - you are making an assumption as highlighted above - but sure.

You think they are going to pay bg more than Jordan? I bet the new dobo makes less than 60k, making it an even larger cost savings.

^ I believe it's typical for a HC to be given a pool of money for assistants, that he can divvy up however he sees fit amongst the staff. I'm not sure where the money came from to give Tony as much as they did, maybe it came out of McCall's own salary. It's not a certainty that firing TB, and/or hiring Grossman will result in any savings for UMass. I'm also not sure how you can dismiss the possibility that Grossman might have been hired simply because he's a good coach and was the best candiate.

He's probably a nice guy, but he'll never be a winner at UMass.
