Game 16, 2019-20: at Dayton (1/11)

Going to be a tough one to say the least. We will probably be something like fifteen-point dogs and I’m thinking we should be proud if we can keep it single digits. There is no way around the fact that the Flyers are just really, really good right now. They are 12-2 with their losses coming against Kansas and Colorado, and they are top 10 on the majority of ranking sites.

I won’t count us out because we have talent and anything can happen in college hoops, but I’m prepared for what’s most likely coming. If we can find a way to make this thing a game though, regardless of outcome, it will be another good learning experience and we will be able to head to Rochester with our heads high.

I certainly don't expect a win, and I'll be pleased with anything remotely competitive as Dayton is on another level this year and they have a tremendous home court advantage. I am, however, reminded of McCall's first year and the game they played up there. Holloway and CJ Anderson were suspended, the roster was extremely thin (only 7 players logged minutes in that game), Rayshawn Miller played 28 minutes, and they came away with a really exciting win. So who knows, anything can happen.

We often play above expectations against Dayton. Not sure it happens tomorrow, but it could.

Tre Mitchell's toughest test so far against Toppin.
Guards will also have their hands full, Dayton very active defensively. Just play hard and smart and thats all we can ask

Best team on our schedule, in their barn. Only hope is they come out somewhat slow being an oddly early start time on the weekend. Then again I saw about half the Harvard basketball team walking into the gym within an hour of tip and we all know how that one turned out. Tough, tough test for a team that has really struggled on the road. I wonder how many highlight reel alley-oops Toppin is gonna get against our press.

Dayton is a scary freakin' team. Their stats are off the charts, 83 points a game and only giving up 65. They have 5 guys in double figures and another at 8.9. They also have 5 guys that shoot 34% or better from 3.

There is hope, however. Their next game is VCU so maybe they overlook us. (I wish).

Ugh, thanks a lot. I hadn't even thought about that until now. Can't wait!

McCall said the other night that Tre is at his best when he's angry. Having to defend vs Toppin and company could bring out the beast, but it could also frustrate him, especially when we're on an enemy floor and not getting the calls. Let's see.

Dayton has been favored by double-digits in each of their last four, and that includes their last two which were A10 games in Philly (La Salle and SJU). In their previous two home games (Grambling and North Florida), they were favored by more than 20.

15 sounds about right. Wouldn't be shocked if it went as much as 17 or even 18, given their home success and our road struggles.

Common opponent so far: La Salle
They won in Philly 84-58
We won in Amherst 77-69

Reminds me of how Rashaan Holloway used to always shut down Mo Allie Cox. Ray just couldn't stand that bully.

I might have Samba guard Obi primarily, though we will obviously double often. With his leaping and rebounding ability, he is the closest thing that we have to an Obi of our own. I think he would have the best shot at preventing offensive rebounds and monster put-back dunks. He’s also fast enough to stay on him when he takes it out of the paint.

From Yahoo Sports:
After opening the Atlantic 10 portion of its schedule with a pair of road victories, Dayton aims to carry that league success over to its home court in Ohio.

Looking to run their home winning streak to 10 games on Saturday, the No. 15 Flyers host a Massachusetts squad that hasn't won a conference road game since defeating Dayton more than two years ago.
I knew we hadn't won an A10 road game in a while but didn't realize it was this long. We better win our home games because the road schedule is not kind. We play at Fordham, who sucks, but we don't play well there. Our other best shots are at GMU, Davidson and LaSalle.

Just checked. The opening line is 19.

Screw the opening line and screw the doubters, here and outside of the clan. Tomorrow we beat the Flyers and burn down the village on our way out of Ohio. I want McCall and Bergeron calling for funeral pyres and human sacrifices. Nothing nice, nothing deferential. The message should be simple- “Crutcher and Toppin limp off the floor in humiliation or you walk back to Amherst.” With love, of course.

Go Minutemen!
