Re: 2022 Recruiting
And this is how McCall manipulates Bamford to staying around till 2026.
Re: 2022 Recruiting
This kid is in 8th grade? 6-3 PG. I'm sure he'll grow thru hs. Sometimes first offers really stick with a kid, whether it be with the school or coach.
Time to Win
Re: 2022 Recruiting
^ I've never been 6' 3", but I was pretty much the height I am now when I was in the 8th grade. I went from being one of the taller guys to being one of the shorter ones as other had their growth spurts.

Re: 2022 Recruiting
wasn't sure where to ask but I guess since it's about 2022 this seems like a good spot.
anyone know for sure how many years of eligibility each player has? For example...TJ is technically a Junior as far as school goes, but listed as a Sophomore, but we know he has 3 years of eligibility left after this year. Noah listed as a junior but has 2 years after this.
Steadman is a Senior - but not a grad transfer - so did he get last year back due to Covid and will actually have another year next year? Or did he lose that year because he transferred? Same with CJ Kelley...will he have 1 year left or 2 after tis year? Thought I read somewhere if you transfer you lose the Covid year?
I guess my overall point is if we only lose Buttrick and Rich, we're in pretty good shape next year.

Re: 2022 Recruiting
^ From what I have seen (and it's possible I misread it) we lose Steadman, Buttrick, Jones and Rich, as well as anyone who transfers. That leaves the cupboard pretty bare in the front court for next year.
Re: 2022 Recruiting
Jones is a Junior so he'll be back but we'll need to replace the other three.
Re: 2022 Recruiting
^^ You are right on Jones. He played 2 years at JMU, 1 year at SCSU and 1 year here for 4 total. I forgot about the Covid exemption giving players a 5th year.

Re: 2022 Recruiting
Does Jones get another year since he didn't play last year? Or does that go back to the 19-20 season? I can't keep any of the exemption stuff straight.

Re: 2022 Recruiting
me either - thats why I'm confused on Steadman - it does not say he's a Grad transfer like Buttrick and Rich. Not that he's a game changer, but he's not bad and wouldn't mind having him next year.InnervisionsUMASS wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 12:43 pm Does Jones get another year since he didn't play last year? Re: 2022 Recruiting
It's Steadman's last year. From the UMass announcement:
I looked at Jones' announcement and there was no mention of how many years he has left, but he is listed as a Junior on the roster.AMHERST, Mass. – Massachusetts men's basketball head coach Matt McCall announced on Friday that Michael Steadman will join the program as a graduate transfer for the 2021-22 season. Steadman comes to Amherst for his final year of eligibility after spending the previous two years at Montana.
Re: 2022 Recruiting
Just read an interesting article in The Athletic (paywall) where they interview college coaches on how they feel about the transfer portal. To a man, they said they will only recruit a high school senior if they see them as a definite starter. They much prefer a player they’ve seen play in college, so they’re keeping the schollys available for March, when the portal opens. The article also projects that at least 700 high school seniors won’t be receiving scholarships because of this. The times they are a changing.

Re: 2022 Recruiting
That math doesn’t add up, to me. I understand the concept, but there are a total number of scholarships available; the portal just rearranges them; it can’t fill them all when kids leave school/graduate, unless they are talking about taking D2 and D3 transfers instead of HS players. The lower level teams that lose players to transfer have to fill the holes, no?nv73 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 12:25 pm Just read an interesting article in The Athletic (paywall) where they interview college coaches on how they feel about the transfer portal. Re: 2022 Recruiting
^ The portal is open. There are already over 120 players in it who have declared they are not retuning in 2022. Most, if not all, have already left their teams.

Re: 2022 Recruiting
That still doesn’t mean 700 HS kids won’t get recruited. That’s the math that doesn’t add up to me. There are near 4500 D1 players. Probably 700-1000 kids leave school and/or graduate every year. Those that leave/graduate can not be replaced by using the portal.
