Sadly, that's pretty accurate.

IMO, so many traditional rivalries in college sports have been torn asunder by greed and avarice, especially in the P5, and the other D1 FB/BB conferences. UMass is not alone. Our situation is stranger by being in 4 'conferences' - A10, CAA, HE, and "Independent FB". And A10 lost some longtime rivals, like Temple.

The previous poster is correct, A10 has been used to 'jump up'.

Rivalry games draw interest and attendance. The lack thereof yields empty seats and indifference.

It seems that School Spirit is team and success specific, spotty at best.

Why jump?? Rpi wise the BE in mens BB is 4 and the AAC is 5. The top half of the AAC is better than the BE. Is it travel?? Is it worth throwing your football team into Indy limbo?? Is it a reaction to your bball team sucking since Calhoon (Ollie's 1st team was Calhoons NC). Just because you join the BE your mens bball team isn't going to be light years better.

so some things we've learned since UConn's big announcement.

1) according to the Houston Chronicle the AACs ESPN deal will only be renegotiated if one of five schools leave the AAC: Cincy, Houston, UCF, USF, and Memphis...UConn leaving does not trigger renegotiation of the deal.
Another important issue revolves around what impact if any, UConn’s departure will have on the league’s new media rights deal that goes into effect in 2020. The $1 billion deal has a clause that would allow ESPN to renegotiate if a member leaves, according to the Sports Business Journal. A source said the clause is specifically tied to five schools (Houston, Cincinnati, Central Florida, Memphis and South Florida), which UConn was not included.

Under the current terms, each AAC school was projected to receive about $7 million annually. UConn’s departure could mean an additional $700,000 bump.

2) Aresco has talked to the B1G about how they scheduled at 11 teams and seems to think it would be easy for the AAC to get a waiver to scrap divisions and hold a champ game between the two highest ranked AAC teams in the CFP poll.

3) if you aren't BYU, Army, or Air Force football only...you need not apply.

4) UConn's exit fee from the AAC is 10 million dollars

that's about all I've been able to decipher these past few days lol...lotta posturing and spinning from both sides.

So true. Even though Maryland is in the Big 10, all their interesting games were against ACC schools. Everyone misses those rivalries.Games against Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern etc hold no meaning. I think if UMASS could consistently schedule UCONN, BC, Army, Temple, Buffalo and even Rutgers and Syracuse- all those schools would benefit from fan interest and lower travel costs.

I also think UConn will find that the BE in 2020 is very different from the BE in say 2010

Considering that it is full of private (mostly Catholic) schools , yes. Also the luster,ay be fading as the A10 looks to get 4 bids this year.

So, please correct me if I'm wrong here, but it sounds like the NCAA gave UConn zero penalties (let's not pretend that probation is an actual penalty). UConn self-imposed the lost scholarship, so I don't see any other disciplinary action from the NCAA.

Bamford should file to reinstate our Final 4 considering how light they go on these big basketball schools, and for crying out loud, didn't the NCAA cancel all the penalties against Penn State only a year or two after the dust settled there?

Mike Aresco told reporters at American Conference Media Day in Newport that the league has no plans to expand following UConn's departure. Will stay at 11.

Kevin Ollie has won his arbitration case vs. UConn. Is due $11,157,032 within next 10 business days, per his attorney Jacques J. Parenteau and William Madsen. Arbitrator was Mark Irvings.
