If he wasn’t talented he should not been recruited in the first place.

If CJ Kelly or whoever is coming I would hope we find out in the next couple of days.

I agree that Matthews probably wasn’t going to be an all league player. Doubtful he would’ve provided any meaningful contribution on the court next year, but he could have been a kid who came in and worked to hard to get better, along with being an enthusiastic teammate.

Looks like there’s going to be 13 guys on the roster next year who think they should be getting playing time, let’s see how the staff manages.

McCall is coaching for his job, obviously. I hope he pulls the right strings and motivates a talented roster to a successful season, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

247sports crystal ball has Mathews 100% going to Chicago State. That was fast. Makes me wonder if he did ask for his release.

I'd like to say I'm supportive of MM, but the lack of consistency and direction of the program concerns me a little, can't lie.

Part of the issue is the double-talk. "We opted for a quick fix and brought in transfers. It didn't work. We're going to build a program with guys who want to be here, create the right kind of culture, etc." Ok. The Administration talks about wanting continuity, which, I guess, pertains only to McCall, not the players or staff members. A lot of talk out both sides.

Was poking around and one thing I found very odd not a single player followed Matthew’s on Instagram or Twitter. When he signed his NLI only tre RT it. On the other hand guys like buttrick steadman and Kelly all had anouncements that got reposts and comments from future teammates as well as follows on social

I'm enjoying all the analysis saying that Matthews is clearly not good enough and wouldn't be an impact player at UMass. Yes, UMass is too good for him, that's right. Sure. Maybe he's not the best player on the board, but he fills a real position of need for this team and wanted to be here.

I know we're in an era of positionless basketball, but for crying out loud, we may end up with the worst rebounding team in the A10 next year. What happens if Steadman is in foul trouble (seems to have a history of that) or gets injured? No size at all. McCall wants to run and gun so he wants smaller quicker dudes, which is fine, but sometimes the other team doesn't let you run and gun, you know, like when they make shots, play defense, or grab a ton of offensive rebounds because you don't have enough to size to rebound, throw outlet passes, and run.

I think it stinks. We may win this year, who knows, but this really soured me on McCall. What he says doesn't match up with what he does.

We lost 1 player to the portal and had 1 player decommit... people are acting like the team is blowing up just like the first few years and again we are having Mass Turnover!! We are doomed!! I'm guessing we have less turnover than 99% of the CBB teams this year. Calm down.

Did you miss where Trent Buttrick committed to UMass? You can certainly make the argument that UMass could benefit from having another option, but this is similar to what UMass had for size this past season. I think there's an extremely slim chance that UMass is the worst rebounding team in the A10, but the best way to improve their rebounding would be to add guys at positions other than C who are plus rebounders (a la Goodwin of Saint Louis), and not adding a 3rd guy who can play center that sits on the bench for 35 minutes a game.

No, I got that. And if your rebuttal to my rebounding argument is that we'll be similar to last year in terms of size, I'll say it's not good enough. We got thrashed out of the A10 tournament because of our lack of physicality and rebounding. Buttrick is a role player, not a centerpiece like Tre was. I'm just saying I think with the loss of Matthews, this is an undersized roster and we're losing rebounding, not gaining it.

It's not about the player we lost, it's not about the turnover, it's about the lack of a recruiting philosophy and approach to team building. Say one thing, do another.
