New UMass Basketball Podcast
Re: New UMass Basketball Podcast
Vanmeter: 100 percent with your post. I harbored irrational rage against Lappas for a LONG time. Coming off that pod and putting the past 20 years in perspective I feel the same way you described in your post.

Re: New UMass Basketball Podcast
Sounds like McCutcheon gave Lappas the cold shoulder from day one, had no interaction with the basketball team, and made a change despite improvements on the court and a strong roster. I don't know if it's true based on only hearing one side of the story, but I don't know why he would throw that out there unless it was true. Let's not forget that he's still very much involved in the College Basketball world as an analyst and broadcaster at CBS.

Re: New UMass Basketball Podcast
Wow, I'll check out the Podcast, but pretty weird to think that the Lappas years were successful in any way. Yes there was a huge amount of talent that left (Mack!), so there was definitely rebuilding to be had, but the next generation was in place with Jenkins, Pugh, Basden, etc.
I generally measure coaches by their league record, because generally teams in your league are on the same footing recruiting-wise and financially as you are.
Bruiser's 5 years in the A-10: 11-5, 12-4, 9-7, 9-7, 11-5.
Then Lappas, 6-10, 6-10, 4-12, 9-7. Yeah, there was a nice little uptick in year 4, but too little too late.

Re: New UMass Basketball Podcast
Losing out on Basden after they didn't retain Bruiser was certainly a killer. I really would have liked to know if Lappas even had a chance to keep him here.

How far has the program fallen under MM? We are now fondly reminiscing on the Lappas years.

Enjoyed the Lappas pod, really well done. The latest one(the 3 hour extravaganza) was pretty unhinged and funny.
